These were all David's sons, with their sister Tamar, in addition to the sons by his concubines. 1 Chronicles 3:9 CSB

David was a bundle of contradictions. The man who composed powerful worship psalms also collected women like so many pretty stones. The heroic slayer of Goliath also schemed against Uriah, a loyal soldier whose marriage David had violated. The figurative father of Jesus Christ was the literal father of nineteen named sons by seven named women, “in addition to the sons by his concubines.” This is an example for Christian men today?

Well, yes. The apostle Paul taught, “Whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction” (Romans 15:4), so what can we learn from David’s life?

Certainly, we see the dangers of unrestrained sexual passion. But we also learn that our own struggles with sex are common (1 Corinthians 10:13)—even in as great a man as David. What saved him was exactly what saves us: the grace and mercy of God, received through faith.

Despite his flaws and failures, David loved God. Though he often acted rashly in the flesh, he responded humbly in the Spirit. David could say, with even greater passion than that with which he sinned, “God is my helper;…The sustainer of my life” (Psalm 54:4).

That is being a man after God’s own heart, the lesson we take from David’s life.

Prayer: Lord, please make my passion for you greater than my physical passions.
