Marks on the Driveway - July 17, 2006

Today, as I walked to the street to pick up the newspaper, I noticed a variety of marks on our driveway. Some were stains from fallen leaves, some were paint stains from the utilities department, others were dirt stains, and I also saw acid stains where I had tried to clean the driveway.

The leaf stains were very pretty and precise. Their color was not very attractive- just a dull brown- but the leaf shape was well defined and very pleasing to the eye. The paint marks were there to denote water, gas and electrical lines. The yellow, blue and red spurts captured my attention immediately, but had no real beauty to them; just color. The dirt stains had been washed onto the cement with rain or sprinkler water, and were faded with no discernible edges. The acid stains were probably the most ugly, for they did not remove the original stain as I had intended; they only added another translucent stain on top of it!

Where am I and where are you on life's driveway? My life has left a mark of some kind. Each of our lives do leave a mark, you know.

Am I like a leaf stain- pretty, but dull? Or does my life depict color and vibrance, like the paint stains? Perhaps I am like the dirt stain; just faded and not really making much of a statement at all. Or am I like the acid stain; just something trying to remove my original mark?

I hope my Christian edges are defined like the leaf. I want no fuzzy outline of beliefs when I take my stand for what is correct in God's eyes. I would like my life to mirror and extend pockets of joyful color which God has given me. I do not want to be like the dirt stain- faded and indistinct and just kind of sitting there. I must reflect what God has washed over me: love, joy, & peace, and do so in an vibrant manner.

The acid stain is so ugly when we, in ourselves, use it to try to remove first stain. In life, our original sin stain is washed clear, but only by the blood of Jesus. The songwriter said it so appropriately, "What has washed away my sin?, nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again?, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow, no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.'

So I thank you Lord, for allowing me to notice stains on my driveway, and for the correlation they have to my life in Jesus.
