Never Forget. Never Forget.
Written November 2013
I can hear the voices
Saying “Never forget. Never forget.”
It's carried on the wind.
It whispers as I remember.
I walked through the museum with a friend
Ten or so years ago,
But the emotions I felt still
Trigger tears today.
Stepping into a time warp of sorts,
I stood in a railroad car
That once held one hundred
People like sardines in a tin can.
Not enough air. Not enough space.
Then the halls of items.
Piles of shoes, clothes, suitcases
Lists of names.
Tiny shoes of children still can
be seen in my mind's memories.
I haven't cried yet.
It's all too shocking.
Continue through the rooms.
Too much to see. Too little time to
Take it all in.
And I can hear their voices
“Never forget. Never forget.”
I lit a candle for Anne Frank.
Sat on a bench and cried.
And cried. And cried.
I will never forget.
How could I?
When even now I can hear their voices whisper
“Never forget. Never forget.”
