I am going to home school this year my sweet 6 year old (1st grader) and am looking for any other families that have done this previously or are starting also. I would just like to exchange prayer requests and support. God Bless

God bless you...this is a wise Godly decision. You will probably get outside opposition, but "hang in there"-all right and Godly things get opposition. Good luck and enjoy...you'll not regret your decision.

We have homeschooled for 11 years....our son will be a senior in the fall. I worked part time for most of it & then quit 4 years ago to devote more time to his high school years. It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I will be glad to help with any questions you may have. I've done some seminars & managed support group meetings so I'm used to questions.

Our children where home scooled until third grade . Now they are in private school . After 8'th grade they will be home schooled again for the rest of the way . God bless you ! Brother Mike  :boy_hug:

P.S. In the first year of home schooling you will see all your short comings in yourself and God will use it to make some changes in your life. It can be very humbling but a growing experience

I guess that I am a little nervous b/c I will be teaching my 6 yr old to read. Also, I know I will be in my home more and I will need to devote time to keeping it up also. A lot of my (Christian) friends are not so supportive, either. Even some of our family says things like, "Do you really think this is a good idea?" My husband and I both feel called to do this, so I know it will be okay. Do you have any suggestions about how to be organized for record keeping-what do I need to keep?? Everything? And what to do with my 4 yr old while I school the 6 yr old. Basically, I could include her and allow her to do artwork and easy worksheets while I do reading with the older. Anyways....Im getting long winded. Just any suggestions would be more than welcome! Also, Alabasterbox, you are the second person to tell me God will use this experience to grow me! I hope I do grow very much and it's not too painful! ;) Thanks!!

Well, I'll third that...God will most definitely use this to help you grow. You will have good days & bad days. Realize that early on & you'll be better prepared. What state do you live in & is it "homeschool friendly"? Lots are not so it's good to know how your state stands & be familiar with the law in your state regarding homeschooling. The library can help you find it if you haven't already.

I am a meticulous record keeper, but I know families who do no more than make a note on the calendar that they had school that day. You have to find something you are comfortable with, but I do strongly recommend keeping some system of attendance & material covered. It doesn't have to be fancy & I'm sure you will perfect what will work for you as the years go by. I've changed our method several times.

By your starting with the elementary grade, it will be easier to find what works for you. Don't be rigid with your schedule tho. I think the best thing I have learned & practiced over the years is that somedays it just won't work to "do school the traditional way". On those days, push the books aside, go outside & watch how nature grows & lives....spend time in God's country. Or maybe go for a field trip - an impromtu one. Then again...maybe it's just time to be mom & go to McDonald's for ice cream. Learning can occur at any time...don't let those moments go by when you can just be together. They are incredibly valuable & precious.

Hope that helps....

Thank you soooo much for the encouragement , it's just what I needed! I really do treasure advice from someone who has experience and will use it all. I am a teacher (used to be :) , so I dont know why I am so nervous, but I do know this is my true calling and my spiritual gift, so who better to use it on than my kiddos? I will do a search of the laws here, that is a good place to start. I also am sending my letter of intent to withdrawl?? I think that's right to our public school since I am pulling him out. (He was enrolled for Kindergarten)
But the advice about scheduling is right on b/c I am so teacher oriented, I want to schedule out our day perfectly and I know it will not always work that way.

One of the reasons we are so excited to begin is b/c my son is so science oriented, so I think a lot of learning will be relaxed, and paying attention to God's great earth and doing experiements. Do any of you have curriculum suggestions for young grades? I have chosen a reading program only, so I am confused as to whether I should just get math and write the rest myself (I love to write curriculum!) or if I should find a program. Also, do you do your own Bible studies/curriculum or follow a curriculum? Thank you so very much for taking the time to give me this info. I cant tell you how much I appreciate it!

For the younger grades, I didn't buy a lot of curricula. We used the library a lot & some of the booklets for math & spelling that you can find at walmart. I began pulling together formal lesson plans in about the 3rd or 4th grade. Until that time, I had a very relaxed form of homeschool. He learned tho...I always tested him & watched his scores improve each year. I found what worked for us & it was never exactly the same each year.

I would "advise" you not to spend a lot on curricula. Use that money instead to purchase science center memberships, go on fieldtrips, etc. Teach to your child's spirit. The saddest thing in the world is when a child's spirit is broken & they have no more joy for learning.

Encourage reading...together is great. As you know from being a teacher, if they read, the rest is easy.

We did our Bible study the same as the others...it changed each year. We would read Bible story books & talk about them...later progressing to actual formal studies & then simply studying whichever book of the Bible he wanted. I let him lead me here more than in any other subject.

If your child expresses an interest in a subject, go with it. His learning ability is at it's peak when an interest is shown. Above all else...keep it fun. Laugh with him, finger paint with him, cook with him, just let learning sneak up on him. It's a beautiful thing.

girlforgod:

I have facilitated classrooms for parents that home school their children. There are hundreds of Christian curriculum programs to choose from. I have found A Beka Books to be a good curriculum for early elementary, it is very easy to use.

I use the Core Knowledge curriculum program and write my own educational supplements for my lab school.
