And the king answered the people harshly, and he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions." 1 Kings 12:13-14 LSB

Wisdom isn’t hereditary. You only need to read 1 Kings 12 to find evidence. Solomon was the wisest king ever. His son Rehoboam? Not so much. This new, young king wanted to leave his own legacy. When the people asked if he could make things a little easier in his reign, the new king promised he would think it over. Rehoboam then got advice from men who worked with his father and then from people closer to his age. The two bits of advice were very different. The older men thought he should make things easier, but the younger people thought it was time to get tough with people they viewed as slackers.

What you read in 1 Kings 12:12-13 is how the new king responded. The people lost heart. When Rehoboam’s rule is remembered, it is rarely for anything good.

You have lost heart and taken heart at various times in your life. The bad actions of people can cause the first, but God always inspires the second.

Prayer: Father in heaven, Your love defines You and also encourages me. Help me remember Your burdens are light and You always step in to help.
