On the Run - February 24, 2006
Have you noticed that there's constant running when kids are around? Rarely walking. Always running. Getting from point A to point B seems to always have to be done at extreme velocities. Kids have to be forced to walk.
I'm not sure exactly when it changes, but I know it does. Suddenly we find ourselves changing speed as adults. Not only do we dislike running everywhere; we dislike running anywhere. We don't want to run from point A to point B. Most of the time, we don't even like to walk there (thus the invention of the remote control). We know we've fully reached adulthood when we have to join health clubs that will force us to run.
But as adults, we need to start running in a whole new way. When there's a temptation, there's one choice: running. 1 Corinthians 6:18 says, "Run away from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body." (NLT)
We need to grow up into mature adults, but that sometimes means we need to remember how to run like a kid. If there's a temptation taunting you on the internet, you need to run by unplugging until you have some accountability or a workable filter. If you're tempted when you find yourself under the influence of a certain person, you need to run by taking yourself out from under that influence. If you're tempted to have inappropriate feelings for someone, you need to run by never allowing yourself to be alone with that person, and by never sharing the kind of intimate conversations that should only happen between a husband and a wife. Don't try a shortcut. There's no remote. Whatever it takes, run.
First Corinthians 10:12-13 says, "Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall. You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations." (CEV) Praise the God who will always provide a way of escape. When He does, let's be careful not to fall. We can do that by strapping on our track shoes and RUNNING. Point B? Victory!
