Here is a list of 100% free software to protect yourself online.

If you are running Windows XP, make sure you have the latest updated service pack and use Firefox or Chrome instead of IE. More importantly, it is highly suggested you upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 instead.

Network Protection & Privacy

OpenDNS (highly recommended)

OpenDNS protects millions of people a day across hundreds of thousands of schools, businesses and homes. We block phishing sites, give you the power to filter out adult sites and proxies among more than 50 categories, and provide the precision to block individual domains.

Wireless Security

How to secure your wireless network

AntiVirus
Firewall
Adware / Spyware / Malware
Online Privacy
Parental Filters
Recommended Firefox Extensions
Windows Utilities:

Mac Software

Security / Performance

Browsers
Free Open Source Software

Windows
Open Source Windows

MAC
Open Source Mac

Tips

Always keep your software and operating system up to date! Most software actually have an automatic update feature as well, turn that on. Keep your browser version up to date. Have your Windows update turned on to 'automatic'. Some don't like this idea, but generally its a better choice.

Bumping up the thread. A lot of people are not so technical so I'm hoping that this will help you out and protect your family while online.

B-Safe Online is good filter for the family too, Chad. We use it for our home computer. Filters out anything even the slightest bit questionable. I love it! It is inexpensive and reliable.

Thanks for posting this Chad, its hard to find good free stuff these days...im using the AVG Free Antivirus program, and it looks for updates every 24 hours, and works great. lol i was almost three years online before getting a bad virus or hacked, or even had the slightest fear of one, plus i only reformated once a year. But those days are gone im afraid.. even in the backwoods of Canada. I use to shake my head at folks with all that protection...not now. I learned the hard way to get a good firewall, the windows one is crap...im useing Zone now.

God bless

I added a few things to the list. I suggest people highly use the software mentioned and secure your computer. Its very important.

Also, its best to use no less than 1024x768 monitor resolution when viewing Talk Jesus forums.

I offically am opening up this thread to anyone who has security questions and in need of advice. Reply here and ask away

thank you so much chad . i have just done an online course on syware etc. they gave us some of these sites. it is good to find them here as i often wonder if i should add others to what i already use. recently added windows defender. i was wondering about adding trend micro to the list of protection to use. i have just added spybot search and destroy and to my surprise it found some things to remove. i do use ad aware easy cleaner reg cleaner and have spyware blaster. plus i have avg and zone alarm.

I was told on c.net while I was doing PC Protection 101 course about mailwasher but I have not found it yet and I just came to see if it was in your list Chad but alas no.

I have used trend micro and that picked up some infections on my pc and my daughters but there was something on hers that could not be removed. It was something to do with msn too.

God bless you for the wonderful information contained in this site. rainbow:

I want to thank you Chad for these online protections as my daughter had a pop up which she could not get rid of and today I used her pc to get this site up and we added the popup blocker and it stopped it from popping up. We also downloaded hijack this.

God bless. :rainbow: :rose:

Thank you for this post Chad! Great info!

I use Firefox, and I love it. I don't even open Internet Explorer.

I also use AVG, I really like that software a lot. It's easy to use, and it doesn't have a lot of pop-ups. Best of all, it's free!

Blessings,
monkeys

hey yo...

i just installed, Zone alarm, wow strange i prevented my self from accessing the internet altogether. lol funniest thing about it is, it asks you to go to a step by step movie tutorial for it, but you need to access the internet to do it. and it blocks all activity from the net on installintg it. hahaha

funni stuff but i fixed it got it all undercontrol.

Thanks heaps Chad, and every one else.

Good stuff my friends. : >

Thanks Chad

I just wanted to thank you for the tips. Many of those programs really helped. People don't realise how important all these programs are until they get caught by a virus or spyware themselves.

I added a lot of new free software, security and optimization links for you folks. Enjoy.

Chad, you are the bomb. Thanks for this. I also use Firefox, and haven't looked back. Internet Explorer doesn't even open. BTW, would it be safe to delete IE from my PC? I tried Mozilla's Thunderbird, but couldn't get use to it, so I'm back on Outlook for e-mail. I use Avast Anit-virus for Outlook. Please tell me it's ok

God bless you Chad for helping us protect our PC's. Any advice on how I can speed it up a bit? LOL

MuchLoved:love:
J

Sister, I posted "Computer & Internet Optimizations:" in my original post. You can use that to speed up your system.

Good timing

Heh, I was just looking for a few things like this.
Thank you very much for putting together such a comprehensive list.

what works?

Thanks Chad,
For me I use an internet cleaner and erazer site. It gives you a menu with everything to be cleaned instead of hunting for it on your computer. Its especialy good for those who don,t know what to dump for fear of dumping the wrong thing.

I also use adaware pro.

Both these sites are not free, But not expensive either. Just one time payments.

I also use avg free. Great site. I just wish it did not have to update every day Now I need protection for my children, That does not use as much space as NIS :-)

I modified the original post to remove a few old/non-existant software, correct some links (thanks AMK).
