“How long will you assail a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position;
They delight in falsehood;
They bless with their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. Selah.” (Psalms 62:3-4 NASB’95)
When we are following Jesus Christ with our lives, in righteousness and in truth, in walks of surrender to his will, and in obedience to his commands, and so we are living for the Lord to do his will, and we are sharing with the people the gospel of Christ, as he taught it, we are going to be opposed. And our opposition may not all come from people out in the world, but a lot of it may come from within the gatherings of what are called “churches,” which may just be businesses being marketed to the world, but called “church.”
Jesus faced this a lot. Most all of his persecution came from the rulers in the temple of God, from the Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, and teachers of the law, all of whom, I believe, were Jews who claimed to believe in God – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit (although most did not believe in Jesus, and they did not see him as God). They didn’t like Jesus and the things that he did and said, and because they saw him as a threat to their power, and because he claimed to be God.
Now, none of us should be going around claiming to be God, obviously, but other than that, if we are following the example of Jesus, as we ought, in how we are to live our lives, for the glory of God, in the power of God, we should not be surprised if some of our biggest opposition is coming from these institutional market-driven “churches” (businesses) which are incorporated under (united and partnered with) the state as not-for-profit businesses, run like businesses, which are conforming to the world.
Twice, in the past, my husband and I were “church planters” under the C&MA church denomination, and so we went through their training sessions, teaching us how to be church planters. I don’t recall much of the first time around, but I do recall some of the training the second time around. At our training we were instructed to use “needy people” to help us get started, but once we were up and running, we were supposed to “get rid of the needy people,” because they would “drag you down.” Wow! Not biblical!!
This was all about marketing, not about loving the people of the world, like Jesus did, and not about ministering to the hurting and the needy, like Jesus did, and not about sharing with them the truth of the gospel for their salvation from sin and for their eternal life with God, though I suspect that they must have talked somewhat about sharing the gospel, but I don’t remember. But it was focused much on marketing and on attracting and drawing in large crowds of people from the world into their gatherings.
But the church is supposed to be the body of Christ, the body of believers in Jesus Christ who are to be ministering to one another, teaching and counseling one another, exhorting one another daily so that none would be led astray by sin’s deceitfulness, and speaking the truth in love to one another so that not one of us is led astray by people in their cunning, craftiness, and deceitful scheming, who are teaching false gospel messages, but so that we all grow to maturity in Christ, as each part does its work.
[Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]
So, if you are a true follower of Jesus Christ, who takes God and his Word to heart, who believes what they teach us regarding how we are to live, and what we are to do, and what we are to teach, then don’t be surprised if you get rejected by “the church” which is market-driven and which is compromising truth and righteousness in order to attract the world to their gatherings. Don’t be surprised if you are in the minority and if you are looked down upon because you don’t blend in with the rest of them.
And don’t be surprised if some of the leaders and some of the people attack you, and come against you, because you do not compromise with the world, and because you won’t alter the gospel message to make it more attractive to the world, and because you will not submit to the will of man over and above submission to God. My husband and I had a friend, a man, who opposed me so strongly that he came to my house and yelled at me and told me I needed to get with the majority, because the majority is right! Wrong!!
And so many of these church leaders are being trained in mind manipulation and in how to get the people to do what they want them to do, and they are being trained in compromising the Scriptures and in the necessity of getting rid of people like me who they were warned about, i.e. “people with strong convictions.” And you might hear, like I did, “You need to go someplace else where you will be a better fit.” But I will never fit with these market-driven “churches” (businesses) focused on pleasing and attracting the world.

Only Trust Him
By John Hart Stockton, 1873
Come, every soul by sin oppressed,
There’s mercy with the Lord,
And He will surely give you rest
By trusting in His Word.
For Jesus shed His precious blood
Rich blessings to bestow;
Plunge now into the crimson flood
That washes white as snow.
Yes, Jesus is the truth, the way,
That leads you into rest;
Believe in Him without delay
And you are fully blest.
Come, then, and join this holy band,
And on to glory go,
To dwell in that celestial land
Where joys immortal flow.
Only trust Him, only trust Him,
Only trust Him now;
He will save you, He will save you,
He will save you now.
