Do Your Best

This song is based off 2 Timothy 2. It begins with a call to be strong and to endure hardship for your Lord. It encourages us to live to please our commander, Jesus Christ. It urges us to run the race by the rules and to endure all for the elect. Then, it goes on to challenge us to understand that we must die to ourselves and to sin if we are to live in eternity with Christ. If we want to reign with him, we must first of all endure to the end with the faith we had at first. If we disown him, he will disown us. That is solemn. Yet, if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, because he cannot be less than who he is.

The passage continues with words of encouragement to do our best to present ourselves to God as workmen whom God approves, and who correctly handle the word of truth. We are cautioned against destroying the faith of others by our own lifestyles, perhaps. Then, it tells us that the Lord knows who are his: those who turn from wickedness (who repent of their sins). We need to allow the Holy Spirit of God to cleanse our hearts of all sin in our lives, and then we need to pursue (put on) righteousness, faith, love and peace, and we need to flee evil desires, and instead be the Lord’s servants in obeying him in all things.

He Gives Purpose

In this song, Jesus is speaking to us, asking us to obey his word, to follow him, to walk in all his ways, to give our hearts and lives to him, to live for him each day, and to be his servant witnesses in sharing his love, grace and his plan of salvation with others who need Christ in their lives. He has a plan and a purpose for our lives, which we can experience if we will but yield to that purpose. It begins with turning from our sins and making him Lord and master of our lives, for he died for us on a cross so that we could be free of sin and free to worship him.

Your Grace Divine

All that I have was given to me by the Lord Jesus. John 1:12 says that, to those who receive Jesus Christ; to those who believe on his name, he gives the right to become children of God. John 3:16 says that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 17:8 states that Jesus gave us the words that the Father gave him. John 1:9 states that Jesus, the true light, gives light to men. John 3:34 says that God gives the Spirit without limit. John 4:14 says that Jesus gives living water that becomes in us a spring of water (speaking of the Spirit) welling up to eternal life. In John 6:32 we learn that God gives us the true bread from heaven, Jesus Christ. In John 10:28 Jesus said that he gives eternal life to those who listen to his voice, who follow him, and whom he knows.

Jesus also gives us peace (John 14:27) and answers to our prayers, if we remain in him and his words remain in us (John 15:7), and he gives us so, so much more! And, everything he has given to me, I freely give back to him to be used for his purposes and his glory so that all that I have truly belongs to God and is dedicated to him for his service. He has my heart and my life and I belong to him.

He Touched My Mouth

Isaiah and Jeremiah were prophets of God in Old Testament times. When they spoke in the name of the Lord God Almighty, they spoke the exact words of God for his people, i.e. they were the word of God. All the law and the prophets were fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Word (see John 1). He is God. We have the written word, the Bible, and we have the Living Word, Jesus Christ, via his Holy Spirit, living within those of us who are truly His. He speaks his words into our hearts, and he speaks out through us, his servants. We are his witnesses. We are to teach, encourage, strengthen, counsel, and give guidance. All of that comes from his written word and from the Living Word living within us and out through us, and in the power of his Holy Spirit touching our mouths and giving us the words to speak.

Oh, I saw the Lord

Who will go for us?”

Send me!”

Before I was born,
God set me apart;
He appointed me
To His servant be.
I said, “I don’t know
How to speak.

‘I am but a child.’
You must go to all,
And do what I say.

For I’m with you.”

I Will Uphold You

In Isaiah 41 is found a promise to God’s chosen people, Israel, which is now the church, the temple of God; Christ’s holy bride. God is promising those who are his that he has chosen us, he has not rejected us, so we don’t need to be afraid or alarmed when things begin to go crazy in this world of ours, which they presently are. He is with us, he is our God, he will give us strength, will help us, and he will uphold us with his righteous right hand.

Our enemy is Satan. We don’t need to fear him, because he is on his way to destruction. The Lord will help us in our battles against our enemy when we daily put on the spiritual armor he provided for us (See Ephesians 6:10-20).

Then, there are those who are yet outside of Christ who are spiritually thirsty. God will answer them, and he will outpour his living water on all those who seek him in truth, and who have the reverent fear of God within them. He can give us this living water because of Jesus’ blood sacrifice on the cross for our sins. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can receive forgiveness of sins and new lives in Christ Jesus, our Lord - free from bondage to sin, and free to walk in true fellowship with Christ.

You are My servant; I’ve chosen you.
I’ve not rejected you; I’ve been true.
Do not be fearful; I am with you.
Don’t be alarmed, for I am your God.
I will give you strength, and will help you.
I will uphold you with My right hand.

All who’re against you will be disgraced.
Those who oppose you, they will perish.
Enemies you search, but will not find.
They war against you; nothing will be.
I am your Lord God, who takes your hand;
Says, “Do not fear, for I will help you.”

The poor and needy, water they need.
Their tongues are thirsty; no drop to drink.
I will give answer; not forsake them.
I will make rivers flow from within.
My living water I will outpour
On those who seek Me; and Me adore.

Jesus provided the sacrifice;
For our sins blood bought; He paid the price,
So we’re forgiven all of our sins,
When we invite Him to come within.

My Sheep

When Jesus spoke of his sheep, he was speaking of his true followers. They hear the voice of the Lord, they listen attentively to his words, they obey what he says, and they follow him wherever he leads them. They find forgiveness and salvation. This is the mark of a true disciple of Jesus Christ. A stranger, whom he called a thief and a robber, is a false christ or a false teacher whose mission is to lead the sheep astray into another gospel – a gospel of men. Jesus’ true sheep will not recognize the voice of a false teacher, in fact, they will discern the error, and thus will not follow the stranger, and, in fact, will run away from him.

My sheep hear me. They know me.
They listen to my voice and obey.
I call them and lead them.
They know my voice, so they follow me.
They will never follow strangers.
They will run away from them.
The voice of a stranger they know not;
They do not follow him.

So, I tell you the truth that
I am the gate, so you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever enters
Not by the gate; other way,
He is the thief and a robber.

Oh, I am the Good Shepherd,

The Peace of Christ

The Lord Jesus was speaking to my heart concerning letting the peace of Christ rule in my heart, and to think about the things above, and not to dwell on the cares of this world.

I think sometimes the cares of this world can begin to weigh us down, and they can even serve as a distraction from our pure devotion to our Lord. Worry can begin to set in as we get our focus off of Christ and on to our circumstances. So, we need to redirect our attention away from the waves which are tossing about us, and we need to get our eyes back on Jesus. Then his peace can begin to permeate our beings and the cares of this life will begin to dim by comparison. He tells us in his word to cast our burdens upon him, because he cares for us, and we are to take his yoke upon us, for his burden is light, because he is the one who carries the weight of it for us.
