"The LORD our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions. Deuteronomy 29:29 NLT

The invasion of Canaan was to begin shortly. God’s people, the Israelites, would soon enter the land God had promised to their forefathers. As the forty-year leadership of Moses wound to a close, the people gathered to hear the great prophet’s final instructions. This is Deuteronomy in a nutshell.

With a name meaning “second law,” Deuteronomy contains many reminders of the rules God laid down in Exodus and Leviticus. The repetition was purposeful and needful, since the Israelites who originally heard the law were dead. They’d been punished for their rebellion, leaving Canaan to a new generation.

Moses wanted these younger Israelites to understand their obligation to God—they were accountable for knowing and obeying whatever He had revealed to them. So are we.

Many aspects of our infinite God are beyond us—infinitely so. But we need not worry over those things. God’s reasoning, timetable, and methods are often “secrets known to no one.” His utter supremacy, His way of salvation, and His moral rules are clearly revealed in scripture, so we must live accordingly.

Our God is sometimes mysterious. Our obligation to Him is not.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your clear expectations. Give me the courage to walk in them.
