To the Chief Musician. Set to "Do Not Destroy." A Michtam of David when he fled from Saul into the cave. Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, Until [these] calamities have passed by. Psalm 57:1 NKJV

David wrote Psalm 57 during a time of extreme stress. He knew that King Saul, whose days as Israel’s first monarch were numbered, was in hot pursuit, intending to kill him because God was with him and had anointed him to replace Saul.

Very few of us will ever find ourselves in a situation where someone literally wants to murder us. But that doesn’t mean we’re immune to situations that bring us extreme stress or anxiety. It’s during those times when we need to run to the refuge our God promises to be for us. He is our source of comfort, peace, encouragement, safety, and help in our times of extreme need.

Like David, we’ll go through times when our lives feel like one big disaster. But no matter how severe the situation may seem, we can always run to God, who will give us a place of refuge—just like the refuge a mother hen gives her chicks by gathering them under her wings.

Prayer: My loving Father in heaven, thank You for being Jehovah Sabaoth, my protector God. I thank You that I can always run to You when things get rough, knowing that I can count on You to get me through any disaster.
