So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning. 1 Kings 21:27

King Ahab is remembered as one of the worst, most wicked kings of Israel, but even he found God's mercy and forgiveness when he repented of his sins. When Ahab learned that his kingdom would fall and his family would be destroyed, he responded with great grief and mourning. He didn't seek ways to hide or numb his pain. His repentance for his well-known sins was public and sincere.

Torn clothing and burlap sheets are hardly standard for expressing sorrow and repentance today, but they serve as helpful pictures of sincere repentance. You may not opt for those practices when confessing your sins to God, but the symbols you use and the actions you take can help communicate the sincerity of your heart.

It's true that anyone can fake their spirituality or their repentance, but when your actions and your heart are united in the same direction, you can effectively express your remorse and take a step toward obedience.

Prayer: Lord, search my heart today for anything that is counter to Your will.

Amen! Dear Lord let your will be done in me. Your will, your way. My way: take the highway. Let me be desirous in seeking and doing God's will once I'm found exposed in your magnificent light! Don't let me run or hide from you, let me come clean Lord! Give me a penitent heart and work that godly sorrow in me! Thank you Lord Jesus Christ!
