SHAVUOT/PENTECOST What’s it all about?

This is the time of year when this “Moed” (appointed time) is celebrated. There are three times when all Israelites were commanded to go up to Yerushalayim to celebrate God’s appointed times, Passover, The Feast of Tabernacles, and the Feast of Weeks, known as “Shavuot” or in Greek “Pentecost” which most churches recognize. We all remember the day of “Pentecost” as when the “Ruach HaKodesh” (The Holy Spirit) fell upon all the believers that were gathered in Yerushalayim to celebrate the Feast of Weeks.

Yet the “Feast of Weeks” (Shavuot) had been celebrated yearly for the past thousand years, ever since the day that Fire fell on Mt. Sinai. That was the very first “Shavuot”. When Moshe and the People of Israel received the Torah from God at Sinai in the form of two tablets of stone, but these were just the major points of the Torah, there were to be many more details in the making.

It really goes back to Egypt when the Israelites were still slaves. YHVH made some promises to His people, and we remember those promises in the form of the 4 cups of wine during Passover.

“I am YHVH, I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians

“I will deliver you from their bondage

“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

“I will take you for MY PEOPLE and I will be YOUR GOD.

The first three were accomplished in Egypt, then, at Sinai, on the day of Shavuot, the 4th promise was fulfilled. YHVH took the 12 tribes of Israel and united them as a NATION. The Israelites left behind Egypt, yet “Egypt” followed them across the Red Sea, in the form of mindset and philosophy and in the form of “false gods” This was evident when they made the “golden calf”. It took YHVH one day to take Israel out of Egypt, but it took 40 years to take Egypt out of Israel.

When we read Exodus 19:18,19 we read about the day of “Torah-giving” at Sinai. They received the Torah amidst lightning, thunder, the sound of the Shofar, and the voice of God. Yet when YHVH finished the 10th commandment, the people said, “Speak to us yourself Moshe, but don’t let God speak to us or we will die”

We wonder what would have happened if the people had not said that? Perhaps YHVH would have continued speaking out the commandments in front of all the people. But, YHVH called Moshe up to the top of the Mountain, and the rest of the Torah was given. 10 commandments were spoken directly to the people by YHVH, and 603 were spoken by God to Moshe, and later, given to the people.

In Leviticus, we see the commandment to celebrate Shavuot in chapter 23:15-22. They were to count “7” sabbaths (49 days) and then the next day (day 50) they were to celebrate. This time was harvest time. During the time of Passover, the barley harvest was ready, then 50 days later, the wheat harvest.

Two loaves of wheat bread were to be made and “waved” before YHVH (up towards heaven, down towards the earth, then to the North, South, East, and West) Blessing and thinking Adonai for the blessings from heaven (the rain that falls from Heaven down to the earth) blessing all the lands of the earth, those lands that are in the North, the South, the East, and the West. When it rains, the seeds come up, grow, and mature, then are harvested.

The rains that are needed are being withheld in El Salvador and in other parts of Central America. We need to implore our Heavenly Father to send the rains, the ground is drying up, and cattle are dying. Yet as I write, there is a small drizzle of rain, just a little, very little. Just heard a clap of thunder. Well, a little bit is better than no rain at all. Now, it is coming down a bit harder, just a little more.

One thing to note, God said; “when you enter the land which I am going to give you and reap the harvest…) So, this was not done while the Israelites were in the wilderness, but when they entered Canaan! And settled that land.

The two loaves of bread were to be baked with leaven. We think of leaven as related to sin, but it is also a good thing, leaven is also related to teaching and instruction. Yes, we are all “leavened” with the “sin nature” yet we are also “leavened” by God’s Word, his Torah, which should “grow” inside of us. So just as bread swells up and grows through leaven, so we grow through the “leaven” of God’s Word. The loaves of bread weighed about 5 pounds each.

Together with the two loaves, 7 yearling lambs were offered, also a bullock, two rams, and a drink offering were presented as burnt offerings. The lambs symbolize “Yeshua” who is the “lamb of God” The number 7 symbolizes perfection. The bullock symbolizes the “strength” of Adonai, the two rams remind us of the substitute ram which took Isaac’s place on Mt. Moriah. Two rams, perhaps one for the Jews and the other for the Gentiles, with the understanding that Yeshua was the substitute and redeemer for both Israel and for the rest of the nations (HaGoyim) The drink offering was wine, which symbolizes the blood of Yeshua.

One can wonder, why 2 loaves? The number 2 in Hebrew can symbolize “union and division”. It takes 2 entities to make a covenant. In our case, Yeshua and us! Through His death, we are “united” in Him when we trust Him as our LORD and Savior, and we are “divided” from the lost world of perdition. The two loaves of bread are waved from up to down, from North to South, and from the East to West. Asking blessings to fall from heaven (rain) to the earth, in all 4 corners of the earth. (and YES, we have rain now!) (at 7:45 pm, Thursday) Toda Raba Adonai!

We can look at the number 2 as in the loaves of bread as things that come in pairs; 2 tablets of the commandments, transformation and resurrection, cleansing and purification, death and life illustrated by the believer’s baptism, but it also symbolizes the Jews and Gentiles.

We can also see parallels in Sinai and Yerushalayim; Fire came down on Sinai, and it also came down at Jerusalem. The fire at Sinai did not touch the people, the fire during Jerusalem’s Pentecost DID touch each and every believer! At Sinai, the “Ruach Elohim” (Spirit of God) rested on Moshe, at Pentecost, it INDWELLED in every believer. At Sinai, the Torah was written on tables of Stone and read to the people, at Jerusalem, the Torah was written on the tables of the heart of believers. Both events took place on Shavuot, both events were accompanied by languages. At Sinai, in Hebrew, at Jerusalem, in Hebrew PLUS many, many other languages (some believe 70)

At Sinai, there was a mixed multitude (Israelites, Egyptians, and perhaps Nubians) at Jerusalem, there was also a mixed multitude of people from all over the then-populated world. These were Jews from surrounding nations who spoke other languages other than Hebrew.

The Torah is the teaching, and the Holy Spirit, is the “teacher” Pentecost at Jerusalem also fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy: “For out of Zion shall come forth the Torah and the WORD of Adonai, from Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2:3)

At Sinai, the people were kept away, at Jerusalem, the people were touched by God, and the glory of God came to each believer. In Old Testament times, the Spirit of God rested on only certain individuals, such as the Prophets, at Pentecost, it filled ALL BELIEVERS just as today, when a person receives Yeshua as LORD and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside of that person.

Another note; the Hebrew word KOLOT means both “voices” and “thunder”. At Sinai, the people heard “voices” both thunder and the voice of God. At Jerusalem, the people heard the “voices” of those who were gifted with different languages to preach God’s WORD.

A final note, the first fruits of the harvest can symbolize “Yeshua” and the “harvest” itself, ALL BELIEVERS who are part of it. Today, there is still much “fruit” to harvest, so, we must get busy and teach the word and share the gospel with those who have an ear to hear and a heart to accept the same.

Some customs for Shavuot include reading the Book of Ruth, since this happened during the time of harvest. The reading and studying of Exodus 19 and 20, when the Tablets of the Torah were given. Also, a tradition of reading the poem written by Rabbi Meir in the year 1097 entitled "Akdamut Milim" (Introduction to the Words) it can be found at 'Sefaria.org"

Other customs are eating cheese and milk products. We're having a pizza party this year. Some people dress white and decorate the sanctuary of the church/synagogue with flowers and green leaves. gifts of food, such as grains, rice, beans, and here, a lot of mangos! This year, Shavuot/Pentecost falls on May 26 and 27.

There was a striking contrast - when the law was given on the first Pentecost, about 3000 were executed; when the Holy Spirit was poured out from heaven, 3000 were baptized and saved!

In Matthew 5:18 we read; “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

We know for a fact that heaven and earth has not passed away just yet, so what is Jesus saying here?

Many claim the law is made void by grace and faith, and totally done away with; but Jesus tells us different above.

Even Paul said in Romans 3:31; “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Paul also said in Romans 8:4 that the righteousness of the law would be "fulfilled" in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Notice in the above Jesus said that all the law would be "fulfilled." Meaning the law is also prophetic. Just as Jesus said in Matthew 11:13 that all the prophets and "the law prophesied" all the way up till John the Baptist.

This post is not a debate over whether or not we are saved by our own works of law; because I know of a Truth we are saved by Grace through faith. But the main point of this post is to show others that there are actually 2 laws at work; one which is natural or carnal, the other which is spiritual.

How one "sees" them is determined by 2 separate mindsets; one which is carnally minded, and the other which is spiritually minded. The flesh of the law ( or carnal ordinances) was fulfilled for us and nailed to the cross in Jesus’ body, in His own flesh.

But "the Spirit" of the law remains and is "established" in those who are born again of God’s Spirit. Just as it is written in Hebrews 10:9; “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He takes away the first, that he may establish the second.

I have written several posts in the past about this natural law, and the "spiritual law" (which shall be "fulfilled" before heaven and earth pass) but very few truly understand what it is I am saying, as I know it is hard to grasp.

So instead of trying to explain to you what I mean by natural law (outward ordinances) and "spiritual law" (or prophecy ) I will just give you a few examples we are already given in scripture. I will give the carnal commandment first (natural law), and then I’ll give the spiritual law (prophecy) and the fulfillment of it, as it is also revealed to us in scripture.

In Hebrews 10:1 we are told; the law was a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of those things.

In this we see the natural (letter of the law) was given as a sign, or shadow of things, and many of the carnal ordinances were just a reflection of the true "spiritual" imagery to come; which would also be "fulfilled" as Jesus said.

Just as the Lord also told the children of Israel that many of the commandments, statutes, and judgments would be for a "sign" between the Lord and them.

Deuteronomy 6:8; “And thou shalt bind them for a "sign" upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.”
And even the Sabbaths were given as a "sign" as seen here in Ezekiel 20:12; “Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a "sign" between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.”

With that in mind let me try to show you what I mean by the natural law being transformed into the "spiritual law" of prophecy, or viewed "spiritually" as prophecy.

The first "sign" we will look at is the sign of the Covenant God made with Abraham and to his seed,
which as the Lord also told Abraham would be a token (sign) in his flesh by way of the outward circumcision.

Genesis 17:10; “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.”
And then we see "the sign" also confirmed here in Romans 4:11; “And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:”

And now here we see the true spiritual meaning of that natural "sign" being fulfilled in us spiritually. Romans 2:29; “But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”

So we see the commandment was first received outwardly as a "sign", only later to be understood and fulfilled spiritually, and received inwardly by the seal of the Spirit.

Just as it is written in 2 Corinthians 3:3; “Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Here’s another example most already know, but it speaks of the same, and of how the natural (letter of the law) was just a reflection of the greater glory to come spiritually.

Exodus 12:21; “Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.”

And then the spiritual fulfillment in the Lamb of God 1 Corinthians 5:7; “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

And again the carnal commandment in the feast of unleavened bread in Exodus 13:3;“And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.”

And then the spiritual fulfillment in Matthew 16:6; “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Matthew 16:11; “How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Matthew 16:12; “Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.”

And again the carnal commandment in the first ripe of the first fruits of the harvest, first seen in the natural law in Exodus 23:19; “The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God…”

And then the spiritual fulfillment of the law in 1 Corinthians 15:20; “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
James 1:18; “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

And again first the carnal commandment in Leviticus 23:15; “And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths
shall be complete: Leviticus 23:16; “Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.”

And then the spiritual fulfillment of the natural law at Pentecost (50 days) Acts 2:1; “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”

And again the carnal command in the "new meat" offering (=Gentiles) Numbers 28:26;“Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto the LORD, after your weeks be out, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work:”

The new meat offering was the offering of salvation coming to “all flesh” which is to the Gentiles. Peter explained this was prophecy being fulfilled in

Acts 2:14-18

King James Version

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”

And then the spiritual "new meat" offering revealed to us by Paul in Romans 15:16; “That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that "the offering up of the Gentiles" might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.”

So by those few examples we see by scripture that the carnal commandment (letter of the law) was just a shadow of the greater glory to later be revealed, and fulfilled in a new spiritual way.

But make no mistake, all of that hidden spiritual law has not yet been "fulfilled", and will not all be fulfilled until the first heaven and earth pass away as Jesus said. And with that understanding, perhaps one would even look at the old natural law in a new and spiritual way through the eyes of the Lord, by way of the Holy Spirit and mind of Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:7-8; “ But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?”

It is the veil of the flesh and the carnal mind that keeps a man from seeing the true "spiritual law" of God. Romans 7:14; “For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.”

The enmity between the mind of the flesh and the mind of the Spirit must first be abolished in order to see and hear what the Spirit is saying in the natural law.

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;”
Hebrews 9:10“Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.”

But even those carnal ordinances that were to be removed symbolized other spiritual things.

For the carnal mind only sees with the eyes of flesh (outwardly by appearance) but the mind of the Spirit searches the deep things of God and sees with the mind of Christ.

So do not judge the natural law by outward appearances, but search the hidden treasures in it by the mind of the Spirit.

John 7:24 “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

Peace and God bless

What is usually translated as “law” is better understood as “instruction”, “teaching” or “protocol” based on trust and obedience. Law is restrictive and punitive by nature, and usually it’s made as a reaction an immoral, wicked act when the damage has already been done, it’s based on distrust and disobedience from the beginning. The greater distrust and disobedience, the more laws will be added.

An instruction, teaching or protocol, on the other hand, has much stronger power than any man made law. If you don’t follow, you’ll immediately suffer natural consequences, ranging from less desirable outcome to mass casualty. It’s like you play with fire, you get burned. Therefore, by no means can the “laws” be abolished as long as they’re embedded in God’s design to make and keep His creation functional, namely, “heaven and earth”. What Christ meant by “fulfill” was a perfect demonstration to show the real purpose of God’s design and how it should be done.
