And He said, "My Presence will go [with you], and I will give you rest." Exodus 33:14 NKJV
It had been a tense day for the people of Israel. They had witnessed God’s miracles before leaving Egypt. They had witnessed His presence as they made their way through the wilderness. They had even witnessed their leader, Moses, walk up the side of a mountain to meet with God. Then? They suffered spiritual amnesia.
While Moses was away, the people made the wrong assumptions of a forgetful mind. Since Moses was with God and they suffered a memory lapse, they gathered all the gold they could find and then asked Moses’ brother, Aaron, to make a god from rings, earrings, and other jewelry.
The people were not secure or encouraged in their relationship with God. They felt abandoned. They decided any god would do, even when it was a non-god. When confronted, Aaron made excuses—so did the people. God was not amused—neither was Moses.
God gave Moses reason to take heart. Read this encouragement again, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” God didn’t say He would gather all His gifts and go home. He didn’t suggest that He would abandon Moses. God would keep Moses company. He promised better days to come. You have the same promise. Be encouraged.
Prayer: I don’t want to forget that You are with me always, Lord. Give me the reminders I need because I will forget.
