Persistent Pursuit - April 03, 2006

I fill the bird feeder closest to my house with special seed. It is the heart of the sunflower seed, shelled and ready to eat. This eliminates a mess on the patio.

The young squirrels this year are very bold and quite charming. I enjoy their antics from a distance, but became annoyed when they assaulted my special bird feeder. They lifted the filling lid and gorged themselves on the expensive seed. They would empty the feeder in one day's time.

I put some glass tape across the top of the feeder to defer their enthusiastic approach to this endeavor, but to no avail. The next morning, I couldn't believe my eyes! The tape had been removed and a squirrel was having a gourmet breakfast. I shooed him away, and retaped the top, this time placing the tape in two directions. I do not know yet if this plan of mine will allow the birdseed to be reserved just for my birds, or if the squirrels will once again enter this "off limits" territory.

Of one thing I am sure. They have pursued this gourmet bird seed with a persistence equal to none. This food must taste wonderful, and although it is a struggle for them to get it (because of the tape), they have a feast once they are there.

Sometimes I feel it is a struggle to read the Bible. It seems taped up because of my priorities and the time schedules in my life. I want to have the persistent attitude of the squirrels; to keep working to open the book that contains Gods' Word. I know there is a gourmet feast in there for me, because each time I dwell in His Word, I am close to Him, and am filled with a wonderful spiritual satisfaction.

If this has ever been a problem for you, I encourage you, along with me, to persist in making the time in each day to go to God's Word, reading even a few verses; something to feed our Spirit.
