Personal Testimony
by T. Austin-Sparks

Years ago I was unquestionably stretched out to the full for God's best (as I trust I am now), and there was no doubt whatever as to my devotion to the Lord. I was right in the full tide of every kind of evangelical activity, and especially in conventions everywhere for the deepening of spiritual life. I was a member of many Missionary Boards and Committees, and was greatly in demand because it was believed that I was a man with a message. This is putting into very few words an immense amount of truly devoted activity and concern for the Lord's interests. Being a man of prayer, I was open to the Lord for all His will, I believed. But there was a certain realm of things against which I was deeply prejudiced. It was really the very essence of the original ''Keswick'' teaching, but I would not have it at any price. I fought it and those who taught it. To make a long story short, the Lord took me seriously in hand along another line, and brought me into great spiritual distress. The very thing that proved my emancipation was that which I would not formerly have touched for anything. That proved the key to a fuller life and a worldwide ministry. I came to see that my judgment had been wholly wrong, and that I was blinded by prejudice. I believed that I was honest and right, and seemed to have evidence of it; but, no, I was in my ignorance shutting out something which was of great value to the Lord and to myself. Thank God for the grace to be perfectly honest when the fact of prejudice was brought home to my heart.... No man is infallible, and no one has yet ''apprehended'' nor is ''yet perfect". Many godly men have had to adjust in the presence of fuller light given when a sense of need made such necessary.

jiggyfly, I'm not realy sure I understand your "prejudice" or what might be the original essence of Keswic teaching. You might, if you would, clearify this a bit. However, that God can expose our religiously proud and hardend hearts is our hope in this narrow Path we walk. Naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do, is our hope and comfort; he is able to save me unto the utermost. His word is a lamp. DGB

The Keswick teaching that T. A. S. was at one time prejudiced towards, may be more commonly known as the Higher Life movement as a part of the Holiness movement that started in American during the nineteenth century. It spread to England and found it's home in Keswick, England and from there spread even more. It basically teaches that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a seperate experience from new spiritual birth and through this deeper spiritual experience sanctification is wrought. Some of the people who were a part of this movement are; Robert Pearsall Smith, Hanna Whitall Smith, F.B. Meyer, George McGregor, Scofield, Tozer and Wuest to name a few.

Ok. Got it. Thought the author was yourself...my bad. Makes sense now.

Meyer, Scofield, Tozer and Wuest I've read some of. Don't remember any imphasis on a second baptism of the spirit, and I'm not sure what that might be. But if you belong to Christ and have the spirit of Christ dwelling in you, then you are going to be known of him (an intament penitrating knowing where you know what he is knowing of you) and know him in all that he is for us in our behalf having died to sin and living to God with our life hid in him.
Who, by the way, is T. Austin Sparks? forgive my ignorance...DGB

It's not a second baptism of the Holy Spirit, It is a seperate experience from Spiritual birth. The experience of being born-again is not the same experience of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

T. Austin Sparks was man who had revealation from God to think outside the confines of religious institution. He wrote maybe 100 or so books and published a bi-monthly paper for about 50 years. He mentored many into spiritual maturity. Do a google search and find out more, there is a website devouted to his writings and teachings and they are all free.
