“Once God has spoken;
Twice I have heard this:
That power belongs to God;
And lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord,
For You recompense a man according to his work.”
(Psalms 62:11-12 NASB’95)

Does God still speak to his people? To those who believe in Jesus Christ with God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in him? To those who have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness? Does he show us what he has for us specifically regarding the gifts of the Spirit given to us, and the body parts assigned to us by God? Does he lead us in the ways he would have us go?

Yes, he does! How does he speak to us? Through his written word, the Scriptures, the Bible (Genesis to Revelation), via the Holy Spirit. But not only through the Scriptures. We have been given the Holy Spirit within us to speak to us all things about God/Christ, and to teach us, to give us counsel, to encourage us, to correct us, to warn and caution us against danger, and to show us what gifts he has for us, and what body parts we are assigned by God, and so we will know God’s specific callings on our individual lives.

[Mk 13:11; Lu 2:26; Lu 4:18-19; Lu 10:21; Lu 12:11-12; Jn 14:26; Jn 15:26; Jn 16:13; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:17-18; Acts 11:12; Acts 13:2; Acts 20:23; Rom 8:9,14; 1 Co 2:14-16; 1 Co 6:19-20; 1 Co 12:1-31; Rom 12:1-8; Eph 4:1-16, etc.]

But all things must be tested against the Scriptures, taught in their proper context. For many people abuse and misuse the gifts of the Spirit and the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and many are proclaiming all kinds of things as though they are of God when they are contrary to the teachings of the Scriptures. But we don’t “throw out the baby with the bathwater,” i.e. just because some people abuse and misuse the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit does not mean we throw them all away.

We should be able to hear the Spirit’s voice just like the people of biblical times could hear his voice, not always through the prophets, and not always through the apostles, and not always just through the Scriptures, but via the Spirit of God speaking inaudibly in our minds and hearts directing us in the ways in which the Lord wants each of us individually to go. Like the Lord might call you to a specific ministry you may have not considered before, or he may lead you to move to another location where he wants to use you.

This is like how God spoke to Moses and told him to rescue God’s people from slavery in Egypt, and how God gave him specific instructions in what he was to do and to say. And like he called Noah to build that ark and to fill it with his family and two of every kind of creature on the earth, because God was going to flood the earth and kill every living creature which/who was not in the ark. And like he called Abraham and told him where to go and what to do. And like God visited many of them in dreams and visions as a way of showing them what he wanted them to do or to learn and to obey.

And we are not to put out the Spirit’s fire. We are not to quench the Spirit. We must test everything against the Scriptures, and in prayer, to make certain it is God we are hearing from, and that what we are hearing is not against the Scriptures, but we need the Spirit to lead us in very specific ways that we are not going to get from the Scriptures alone. And we need the Spirit to give us understanding of the events of these last days so that we don’t fall for the lies of the enemy and so our eyes are open to truth.

And he will show us, if we are willing, where we have been taught things wrongly, and where we need to see them through the eyes of the Lord, and in the Scriptures in their proper context. And he will help us to see what is really going on in our world and in the political arena so that we are not deceived, and so that we are not being led astray by men in their cunning and craftiness and deceitful scheming. For not everything is as they say it is, and not everything is what it looks like on the surface. Lies and liars abound!

And then we must not fear the direction that our nations and our world are headed, for the Bible prophesied that all this stuff was going to take place. And because the Scriptures did and do warn us in advance of these things, we, thus, should not be taken in by the lies, because we should be able to see that God told us in advance that these things would happen, and we are seeing them take place. And we should pray for spiritual discernment and stop believing everything we hear or read in the news. So many lies!!

Now none of this can take place unless God allows it, and he allows it for a purpose. And one of the purposes of what we are seeing right now, I believe, is to judge the adulterous and idolatrous church here in America, and perhaps in other nations, for so much of what is called “church” today doesn’t even resemble the biblical body of Christ and the teachings in the Scriptures on what that should look like. For we are to be helping one another to not walk in sin but to obey our Lord, but that is being rejected.

So some people are not going to see the goings on in the world as the lovingkindness of God. God is not the author of evil, though, but he will use evil people as his instruments of judgment against other evil people, especially against his idolatrous and adulterous church who have fallen prey to the deceptions of the flesh, and have adopted the philosophies and the ways of this fallen world, and have become so much like the world in order to attract the world to their gatherings. And this will be to revive them.

For, in the end, when Jesus returns to judge and to take his faithful ones to be with him for eternity, many are going to stand before the Lord in judgment claiming him as Lord, and professing all the things they believed they did in his name, and many are going to hear him say, “I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of lawlessness.” Why? Because they would not believe him when he said that not everyone who gives him lip service will enter the kingdom of heaven, but those doing (obeying) his will.

What we are going through right now, and what is yet to come, because of the cruelty of much of it, some people may blame God. But it is not God’s fault if we don’t listen to him, and if we do not obey him, and if we ignore him and we go our own way, and do our own thing, and live however we want, and then expect that God is going to let us into his heaven. He told us if we don’t obey him, and if we continue in deliberate sin, that we will not inherit eternal life with him. We just need to listen to him and obey him.

How Long Till the Morning

Scripture: I Thessalonians 4:17
By C. E. Couchman

Consider the mornings of this mortal land,
Each a new beginning from the Maker’s hand.
While the storms may gather ‘gainst the evening sky,
The day breaks cloudless in the morning.

Rise up to the battle, for the skies dawn clear.
Let us gather courage while the foe draws near.
Though the night falls weary, saints of God, march on!
And He’ll raise our banner in the morning.

When the trumpet sounds to signal Heaven’s day,
Resurrection Morning when the dead shall wake,
What a glorious gath’ring when the Lord descends
And we rise to meet him in the morning.

How long, my Lord? Till we see the morning?
How long, O, my Lord, till we see your face?
O my Lord, guide us through our troubles
Till we rise above them in the morning.
