Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me. For I cried out to him for help, praising him as I spoke. If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me. Psalm 66:16-20 NLT

These verses describe “3 C’s” of effective prayer: first, the confidence we have in God; second, the conditions we must meet; and third, the conclusion we’ll enjoy.

Through the first fifteen verses of Psalm 66, the writer praises God for His awesome glory and might. This is a God who could lead His people out of slavery in Egypt on a dry path through the Red Sea (v. 6), a God who brought them “through fire and flood” into “a place of great abundance” (v. 12).

With confidence in God’s power and goodness, the psalmist ensured his right standing. By meeting the condition of prayer—confession of sin—he knew God would listen.

The beautiful conclusion? “God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.” And God never removed His unfailing love.

Thousands of years have passed since this psalm was written. But God has not changed. He still welcomes the confident, clean-hearted prayers of His people.

Prayer: Lord God, You are great and powerful! Please hear my honest, humble pleas.
