Proverbs 25:21-22
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; 22 For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you.
and
Romans 12:17-21
17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
So here are the obvious reasons:
1) a reward; I do know that the Lord will reward us for behaving as we ought as his children - Isaiah 1:19.
2) vengeance is HIS and HIS only - yes my Lord - as you will
3) it's HIS way and thusly it is righteous
4) Jesus lived as such so we are to imitate that way
5) long list of others I am sure...add to list
Hidden reasons:
I do not think we are to perform good deeds from malicious intent; intent to harm the other as the end of it all. At the surface, Proverbs 25:22 as being malicious, to heap burning coals on one's head - sounds painful. Pain, however to lovers of God, works for the good. Our faith is tested by fire. Like a coal deep in the earth, under immense pressure and temperatures over years and years in this condition, comes up pure in diamond form.
Are these very same coals intended to bring the enemy to repentance? Not that they will but intended to?
