What Is The Reason Christians Study The Word Of God?
The word of God has been written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit for the sole purpose of giving people an opportunity to become elect and to be called the bride of Christ and to live with Jesus eternally in heaven.
Luke 8:21 So then answering, Jesus said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these: those who purpose in their heart to listen and understand the word of God, and purpose to perform it.”
We can choose to live our life in only two ways: 1) For ourselves or 2) For God
If we live to please ourselves or any other person, we are unrepentant, unforgiven and worldly people.
If we live by the word of God, we are Christians, and our actions gain us spiritual gold, silver and precious stones.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15 By the grace of God, which was given to me, I laid down a foundation as an expertly skilled master builder and architect, but another builds on that foundation. So then, let each one take heed in what manner he builds on that foundation! For no one is able to lay down another foundation, other than the one being laid down, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds up on the foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, sticks, wild grass, stubble, the labor of each individual person will become publicly known, for that day will make it clear because it is revealed by fire, and the fire will prove what kind of quality each man's labor is. If any of the labor that he has built on the foundation remains, he will receive a divine recompense. If any of the labor is consumed by the fire, it will be lost, but he himself will be rescued, but likewise in the way described, by fire.
If Jesus is why we live and do what we do, then Jesus is the foundation of our life. But it doesn’t stop there! We need to build on that foundation with gold, silver and precious stones. When you study the Word of God you should purpose in your heart to put into practice what you learn, and then you will be earning spiritual fruits which is pleasing to God.
Galatians 5:22-25 Now the fruit of the spirit is unconditional love, joy, peace, patience and long suffering in bearing the offences and injuries of others, kindness, holiness, faith, gentleness, humility, self control; against such things there is no law. So then those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh, along with the evil passions and the lusts and forbidden desires. If we live our lives in the spiritual, then let us exhibit the control the spiritual has over our lives.
Fruits of our lives are the gold, silver and precious stones which we will bring with us when we go to meet Jesus. As you can see these fruits are inward qualities of the spirit of a person (fruits of the spirit) and that is why Paul calls them building blocks of each Christian person, built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. Now it is important to know that each of these 10 building blocks are not just thought into existence in our lives, but rather they are worked out and eventually become a building block if our works are performed with the correct attitude.
If our motive is right we gain fruit; then when we get to heaven we will give all of the fruit to Jesus.
1) Unconditional love – By reading, understanding and observing His commandments
1 John 2:3-5 And by this we understand that we have known Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him”, and does not read, understand and observe His commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in this person. But whoever reads, understands and observes His word, in this person the unconditional love of God has truly been perfected.
2) Joy – By observing the things Jesus spoke to us and therefore abiding in His love
John 15:10-11 If you firmly observe My commandments, you will abide and remain in My unconditional love; just as I have firmly observed the commandments of My Father, and I abide and remain in His unconditional love. I have spoken these things to you, so that My joy and gladness might be in you, and your joy and gladness might be full and complete.
3) Peace – By being in union (intimate) with Jesus who has overcome the worldly system
John 16:31-33 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe and trust? Behold, a time is coming, and has arrived, that each of you might be scattered to his own family, and you will leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. I have spoken these things to you, so that you might have peace in union with Me. In the world you have tribulation from oppression and affliction, but be of good courage and cheerful, I have overcome and conquered the worldly system.”
4) Patience – By bearing the offenses brought into your life by others
Galatians 5:22-23 Now the fruit of the spirit is unconditional love, joy, peace, patience and long suffering in bearing the offences and injuries of others, kindness, holiness, faith, gentleness, humility, self control; against such things there is no law.
5) Kindness – You put on yourself by your own decision because God showed kindness to you
Colossians 3:12-13 Therefore, put on, as an elect of God, holy and beloved, hearts of compassion, mercy, kindness, moral goodness, humility, gentleness, patience and long suffering in bearing the offenses and injuries of others. Bear with and endure one another and forgive one another, if anyone might have a complaint against another person; just as the Lord, our Owner, forgave you, so also, in the same manner, you also forgive.
6) Holiness – By the discipline of God
Hebrews 12:9-11 Furthermore, we had, surely, earthly fathers to instruct and chastise us and we reverenced them; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and have true life which is active, blessed, and without end in the kingdom of God? For they, on the one hand, were training in righteousness with discipline for a short amount of time, according to whatever seemed right to them; but God trains us in righteousness with discipline on account of our advantage and profit, so that we may be made a partaker of His holiness. Moreover, all training in righteousness with discipline for the present seems not to be joyful, on the one hand, but rather painful and grievous; yet, afterward it produces the peaceful fruit of righteousness and holiness as God has created us to live, to the ones who have been earnestly trained by it.
7) Faith – By spiritual understanding and insight given to the believer by Jesus
Romans 10:16-17 But not everyone submissively obeyed the gospel message. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed and trusted in our spiritual understanding and insight?" (Is 53:1) Accordingly, the faith comes from spiritual understanding and insight, but the spiritual understanding and insight by a spoken word from Christ.
8) Gentleness – You put on yourself by your own decision (See #5 kindness)
9) Humility – Jesus commands us to put it on Colossians 3:12-13 (see above) and by fasting
Psalm 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer kept returning to my bosom.
10) Self control – By mastering your desires, passions and sensual appetites
2 Peter 1:5-12 Moreover, for this very cause, after contributing all earnestness and diligence, also, you supply along with your faith, moral excellence, moreover with the moral excellence, knowledge, moreover with the knowledge, self control, moreover with the self control, stedfast endurance, moreover, with the stedfast endurance, reverence toward God, moreover with the reverence toward God, love of the brethren, moreover with the love of the brethren, unconditional love. For these qualities, belonging to and existing in abundance within you, render you neither unproductive nor unfruitful towards the precise and correct knowledge of our Lord, who owns us, Jesus Christ. Therefore, the person who does not possess these qualities, he is spiritually blind, being mentally shortsighted having forgotten the cleansing of his former sins. For this reason, to a greater degree, brethren, be earnestly diligent to make sure of your call and election. For you will absolutely never ever stumble spiritually practicing these qualities. Truly, in the same manner, the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Owner and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be abundantly, and to a greater degree, supplied to you. Wherefore, I will always be ready to remind you, concerning these things, although you already know them and are firmly set in this present truth.
In Conclusion
1 Peter 1:13-16 For this reason, prepare your intellect, feelings and desires for a long hard journey, be spiritually well balanced, directing your hope perfectly and completely on the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. In the same manner as children, who are submissive unto obedience, do not be conformed, fashioning yourself to the former lusts and forbidden desires in your ignorance, but rather, like as the One who called you is holy, you yourselves also become holy people in every manner of life, spiritually and physically, because it has been written, ‘You will be holy people since I am holy!’
