[h=2]We have been reshaping You
through the passing generations
Our clumsy little fingers
attempt to mold
some manmade dough
We have been reshaping You
to fit into our preferences
and they say,
"Surely God would not
keep us from Heaven.
Surely we can live
to seek our own satisfaction.
Surely we're created for
our skin to singe in sin."
Then we want to hate You
or say You don't exist
when our lives
apart from You
have shattered
and cut us open
And we act like unruly children
with reckless tempers
and adolescent tantrums
"But spare us, please,"
we say,
"of all the discipline."
We try to write
our own rules
but we contradict ourselves
We lie
but we hate
being lied to
We loathe
but abhor those
who succumb to their loathing
We steal
but hold our own treasures sacred
and tightly we grip
so they are not stolen away
We control
but we're out of control
We abuse
but we expect to be loved
We take
and say, "look what we've given"
We defile our bodies
and seek out amusement
but we don't understand
the diseases that kill us
It goes on
and still we don't get it
We just keep reshaping You
And they say,
"Surely we have no creator.
Surely we can all set
our own standards for good."
and when someone massacres
dozens of high school children
do we still believe
that is true?
And You watch us
slurring and staggering
through our inebriation
and surely, Your heart must be grieving
but they say,
"Surely, if God is good
than a good God
would not punish us."
but surely, even a good man
would not condone crime
or turn away
from the wickedness committed
and surely a good God
must also be just
But assuredly
God offered
His own Son for our freedom
but if we won't even
accept grace and repent
then surely
we deserve what we're given
and these idol structures
that we have been shaping
represent a foreign god
for the Lord cannot be mishapen
and there is only
one way to Heaven
and if we terminate
and perish
it is only because
we cannot reshape the Truth
