My attention recently has been directed to Bible Version/Translations here and elsewhere! I have been drawn back to consider and contemplate my own Local Christian History?
A quote if I may be allowed from, 'History of the Bible in English.' F.F. Bruce, Lutterworth, London, 3rd. Ed.1979. P96.
"The King James Version - The Hampton Court Conference."
When Elizabeth Died on March 24, 1603, the crown of England passed to James.I, who had already worn the crown of Scotland for thirty-seven years as James.VI.
Some months after his coming to England, James summoned a conference of churchmen and theologians at Hampton Court "for the hearing, and for the determining, things pretended to be amiss in the Church.............................................. the resolution,
"That a translation be made of the whole Bible, as consonant as can be to the original Hebrew and Greek; and this to be set out and printed, without any marginal notes, and only to be used in all Churches of England in times of divine service." [FF.Bruce. P96.]
The Geneva Bible was and is a very good translation. But the marginal notes were politically motivated and some of them were plain Heresy in the English's eyes! The marginal notes caused the Geneva Bible to be dust binned, for want of a better way of putting it in the British hierarchy. Much the same as Chad. our Administrator wanting to keep comments wholly within Scripture here, no marginal notes! The States favour swung behind a new translation for the English Church!!!
THE TRANSLATION.
Background of the new translation we know as The King James Bible!
1. Forty-seven men - Worked on Translation!
1). Old Testament was entrusted to three panels of translators.
2). New Testament had two panels.
3). Apocrypha had one.
PANELS OF TRANSLATORS.
1. Two Panels - Oxford.
2. Two Panels - Cambridge.
3. Two Panels - Westminster.
The draft translation of the whole Bible was reviewed by a small group of twelve men, two from each panel.
There is a whole host of fine detail in F.F.Bruces Book from which the above information is drawn!
NB.: Names of Bible characters were to correspond as closely as possible to the forms of the Geneva and Bishop's Bibles.
Marginal notes the cause of rejection of the Geneva Bible were to be allowed and used to explain Hebrew and Greek word meanings only.
So here we have a potted history of the first translation and establishment of the Authorized Bible of King James printed for the Kings most excellent Majestie Anno Dom.1611.
Notes of interest to me anyway,
1. When Jesus quotes Old Testament and you look up the quote in the Old Testament the words are not always the same. If my memory serves me right this is because the A.V. uses the Hebrew Old Testament and Jesus is using the Greek Septuagint, (The Old Testament translated into Greek in Alexandria in Egypt!).
2. My Book of Psalms in my Common Prayer Book also doesn't fit exactly the AV. because it is in an older English from the Bishops Bible. Comparing the two Psalms can be enlightening at times.
Yep folks we always have to have a Scotsman getting into the act! Of course he was the King of England at the time and prime mover of the creation of the Authorized Version so we will just have to forgive him for that.
Never the less a version based on the Hebrew and the Greek is a comforting thought for any Born Again Christian to sojourn through life with! It has stood the test of Time and the ravages of the Queens English which are still turning up in some funny places to this day!!!
JUST A LITTLE REMINDER!
John.3:16-19. of my1611 copy of the Bible, (And I do hope some of yours?).
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son: that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him, is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[Authorized Version by King James. 1611].
You may have a slightly different version if it is based on the revision of 1881 but the truth does not alter in what it is saying, I have the two in a Parallel 1882 edition)!
The translation is very close to the actual Greek New Testament in it's grammar and it's word substitution and meaning, (Zondervan,Parallel New Testament In Greek and English, I wouldn't be without it!).
I am very pleased to find here that I haven't found any uncomfortable surprises in this little basic research! Those who use it still can rest in the blessed assurance that they can trust this, a safe translation from the original languages with King James having been inspired by God to do it in a time when there were many more worldly important things going on at the time. Such as James successfully keeping his head on his shoulder for one!
I hope some of this lends food for thought? Leave the things that are not for you. Rest in the arms of the Lord and feed on those things that the still small voice points you at!

A real man of God. One of the more solid Christian Theologians I have ever come across. I always found that anything written by him was worth a read, especially if you were going into an examination room armed with a Bible and needing knowledge to get it down on paper!
