Hi! So thought I would see how other parents think on here. I have gone to a new church for about a year now and love it. I believe my faith has deepened in Christ Jesus as well as my family.

My pastor recently did a sermon on "Pastor's Pet Peeves on Easter." And one of those was explaining how the Easter bunny/Easter eggs, these were all pagan customs and deter from the Resurrection of Christ. It is ironic my sermon notes blew away the same day in the wind. LOL. I will have to go back and listen online again...but it isn't that I haven't thought of this before. I've had years of conviction off and on about it. But this year, for me, I have decided not to participate in that part (the bunnies and eggs). I have decided that my husband can take the kids to events if he wants, and I'm not going to bash family if they want to give the kids an Easter basket or something... But I'm not going to encourage it/take them myself...I want to lead them to the cross and not mix the world with God. It is hard, because I have fond memories from my childhood of Easter Sunday. And I'm surely dressing them in cute dresses. But it was like the message I needed to hear... Our family doesn't do Halloween now. I've always been convicted of that. It is just hard when it isn't necessarily evil to have a picture with the bunny and everything. It was goddess of fertility though. And the one verse in the Bible that says "Easter" is actually about the Jewish passover. No eggs involved.

It is hard as a parent, because I don't want to have a rod and iron household. I don't want to scare them away from Christ. I want them to be able to experience things if they want to. My husband is such a good man. He hardly shares his feelings, but he said we all have different beliefs in things and supports me.

It was a blessed week just getting back from a family trip. But this is in my heart and wondered if any other parent has felt this way too or has any advice.

God bless you all and it is a Good Friday, because of "it is finished."

On the serious side though - as a Spirit-filled Christian traditional old time religion festivals that come out of Rome are not my thing.
Not big on Christmas and the lights, trees and all that. But I still dabble in a little to keep socially connected with my grandchildren and other family. No need to burn all the bridges.
Definitely NO Halloween - that is ghoulish and anti gospel.
Easter is easy to avoid as others buy more than enough of their own chocolate indulgences.
Pancakes and Lent not my thing also.

When praying in the Spirit everyday is resurrection day.

A simple reaction just doesn't cut the bunnies unfriending me. Too funny. Oh the persecution!!!

But yeh. Family would be the big question in my mind. I don't want a conviction to push family away from God. It isn't a sin I don't think. Worldly for sure. We are all at different places in our spiritual walks with God and that is okay. I just want to do things to honor God, because I love Him.

.
For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

Hi Mayflower, it's a quandary isn't it? For years I gave my grandkids alternative presents at Easter but I don't think that was the right thing either. Now they are are mostly too old apart from the youngest. Now I think I don't so much mind the giving of chocolate eggs it's this thing about the Easter bunny bringing them that bothers me. Easter egg hunts are fun but children need to learn that the reason they get eggs is because we are celebrating new life in Jesus with his resurrection.

I taught resurrection eggs for years in Sunday school. My goal was to associate eggs with Jesus rather then the Easter bunny. I'd give those eggs with scriptures and candy inside. Try to make customs into Godly customs. In fall I'd do the "scarier" Bible stories like Elijah's vision with the dry bones coming to life, "candy corn" Trinity, how to not fear with God being with us.

Romans 12:2 in NLT struck me a bit:

There are more scriptures he used also, and I'm trying to look them up (it was windy and I was carrying a baby and helping my daughter too. The notes really did blow out of my Bible. So frustrating!!! LOL. ) But I'm not sure if these pagan traditions were "made clean" or not.

But the eggs and bunny really do go back to the goddess and pagan roots. Even Easter being on a different day each year, is because it is the start of the goddess year of fertility.

I'm getting confused again though, so that in itself distracts from Jesus and what HE did. But just food for thought. Things become harder as a parent, because I speak for them.
