Restore us, O God of our salvation, And cause Your anger toward us to cease. Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations? Will You not revive us again, That Your people may rejoice in You? Psalm 85:4-6 NKJV
In the 1730s and 1740s in Colonial America, an event called the First Great Awakening swept through the colonies. This revival resulted in a surge in devotion to the Christian faith among church-going believers, including an intense awareness of personal guilt over sin as well as a deeper commitment to the message of salvation through Christ. The Awakening made the faith more personal to the average person.
Today’s scripture verses are part of a prayer asking God to bring spiritual revival to the people of Israel. It acknowledges that God was not pleased with the spiritual condition of the Hebrew nation, and it also recognizes that God Himself is the source of revival and shows us that we can and should pray for spiritual awakening.
Do you feel a need for personal revival? Do you recognize the need for revival in your church or in our nation. Then talk to God and ask Him to send revival. That’s a request He will honor.
Prayer: Lord God, please keep me sensitive to Your Spirit’s prompting and direction so that I can know when I need revival. When I need revival, remind me that You love me and want me to enjoy a strong and growing relationship with You.
