Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon. Nehemiah 4:17 NKJV
Sometimes our enemies are people who harass and oppose us, but at all times, our true enemies are spiritual, unseen, and just as real. When we see Nehemiah leading the wall builders, who had both work tools and weapons at the ready, we’re reminded that all our battles exist on two levels. So, that’s how we must fight them.
Think of the sacrifices we’re willing to make for our job—laser-focusing on the task, putting in extra hours, balancing work tasks with home life so our family doesn’t lose out. What if we treated our spiritual work as seriously—doing the necessary praying, Bible study, and service—with the same goal of excellence?
People do good all the time without glorifying God. To do the good works God has set aside for us, we must be walking as His light in the world. By equipping ourselves spiritually, we keep our work in the physical world in perspective. God’s Word is the right tool for every job we do because it prepares us to see everything through the lens of what matters most to Him. We faithfully do the work God has given us to do—whether it’s our job or ministry—and we trust Him with the outcomes.
Prayer: All-sufficient God, prepare me as I spend time with You in Your Word for what today will bring.
