Same Difference - August 26, 2005
Would it frighten you to know that on some levels there are two different Rhondas? I'm not talking schizophrenia here exactly. But it's interesting to note the differences between "Writer Rhonda" and "Speaker Rhonda." The uniform, for instance. Writer Rhonda goes to work in her jammies. Eventually she may don some old jeans and an oversized shirt. She puts on just enough makeup to keep the neighbors from complaining. Her hair has been known to stick out several inches further on one side than it does on the other and not necessarily in the same direction. Symmetry doesn't seem all that important to her. Writer Rhonda could make the toughest fashion consultant doubt her abilities (picture the poor glam-counselor rocking back and forth in the corner of her salon mumbling, "Must have symmetry, must have symmetry").
But Speaker Rhonda has a different fashion sense. Her hair (appropriately symmetrical) is about three stories taller than Writer Rhonda's. The uniform has been known to get quite glitzy and the heels make her appear at least three inches taller than she really is. She wears about three coats more makeup. And Speaker Rhonda appreciates the advantages of accessorizing. She sparkles from head to toe and back up to her meticulous glitter-French-manicure.
Recently the two Rhonda worlds collided a little when Writer Rhonda went shopping for Speaker Rhonda's clothes (it was a little like meeting myself coming and going). The sales lady didn't get it at all. "Uh, pardon me, but if you're looking for the lawn and garden department, our store doesn't have one."
There was an equally confused reaction from other parents and fans when Speaker Rhonda had to go straight from a speaking engagement to her son's baseball game. Black velvet seemed somehow inappropriate for the bleachers.
You'd think one Rhonda would be about as good as another, but when shopping for an evening dress or taking in sporting events, take my advice and make sure you're sending the right Rhonda. Each has her job. They're different, yet the same.
It's a lot like the body of Christ. There are many working together for the Kingdom, different in so many ways, yet with the same purpose. 1 Corinthians 12:12 says, "The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ." (NLT) The next verse tells us that even though we're different, we have the very same Spirit of Christ living inside us.
God designed us to work together. Verses 18 and 27 tell us that "God made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it. Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it." (NLT)
So let's take care how we treat others in this wonderful body of people God has put together. Each one has a special role. Even when the mix is challenging, it's ever rewarding.
Of course, I would also do well to be careful how I mix Writer Rhonda and Speaker Rhonda. I hear my former fashion consultant decided to become a forest ranger.
