This is the word the LORD spoke about Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, through the prophet Jeremiah: Announce to the nations; proclaim and raise up a signal flag; proclaim, and hide nothing. Say, "Babylon is captured; Bel is put to shame; Marduk is terrified." Her idols are put to shame; her false gods, devastated. Jeremiah 50:1-2 HCSB
False gods don’t stand a chance against the one true God. Yet even we as Christians can be distracted by the “deities” of this world.
Not the Bels or Marduks of Babylon, which Jeremiah prophesied against. Not the Baals or Ashtoreths or Chemoshes or Molechs that pepper the pages of the Old Testament.
But how about those things that grip the hearts of so many men today—wealth, fame, sex, intellect, power? In their proper place, each has value. But if they cause us, as Jesus warned the Christians of Ephesus, to abandon “the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4 CSB), we set ourselves up for disappointment and pain. When we consciously and regularly take stock of our attitudes and pursuits, however, we can “keep [ourselves] in the love of God, expecting the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life” (Jude 21 CSB).
This world is always trying to press you into its mold. Don’t let it! By the almighty power of the one true God, say no to every cheap substitute.
Prayer: Lord, only You are real and true. Keep me in your perfect ways.
