Season's Heatings - December 02, 2005
This summer I had a deadline for a Christmas book. Christmas. In the summer. I cranked the thermostat down to the North Pole setting, started up the Christmas music and put on my Santa hat to get in the spirit. You should've seen my kids all bundled up in their winter duds, then peeling off several layers every time they wanted to go outside.
I think it was when they caught me pulling weeds in my shorts and Santa hat that the neighbors started threatening to do an intervention. Christmas spirit is good. But jingling all the way in the middle of the summer is probably just a little weird. And my whole family is still recovering from thermostat confusion.
The Christmas spirit really is a year-round affair. The center of Christmas is Christ--and Jesus is never out of season. Our Lord is worthy of praise from season to season, from year to year, from generation to generation. Psalm 145:3-4 says, "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts."
Let's ring in the season jingling all the way. There's nothing like a season-lifting dose of Christmas spirit. True Christmas spirit happens as we're filled with the real Christmas Spirit (with a capital "S"). We have salvation because a Savior was born. Remembering our Savior is a sure way to have the truest Christmas spirit and to have the warmest holiday season; no matter where you set the thermostat.
