Can secular music and television hurt our spiritual walk?

That is a question that a lot of believers struggle with but on some studies I have found the answer is yes.
Secular music and television of secular programming has sometimes formed it to be totally innocent but when you really look into it you can find that it isn’t nothing we should really involve our selves with.
I loved all music but mainly country music. I would have never figured that it could plant seed of any kind in my mind but in all honesty it does. Think for a moment if a particular song talks of adultery or lust what kind of seed do you think it can plant. It’s the same with all songs. If you hear a song about a broken heart it can bring depression. Some of these heavy metal bands out there play music of suicide, anger, violence and sex.
The bible tells us to keep our selves from the things of this world. Secular is of the world. I know that even some country singers play music about Jesus but its not what the words say it’s the conditions of the artists heart. They will play what sells. Anyone can cry Jesus, but what is the true conditions of their hearts.
Mark 7:6-9
6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

"`These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

How can secular effect us?
Music is a very strong ministry whether if it be for the Lord or for the devil.
Music sets the moods to where we open willingly to receive. The question is what do you want to receive? The gifts of the spirit or the mind of the flesh leading back into bondage.
I am not saying every television show or every secular song is a ( no-no) but what I am saying is fallow Holy spirit. He will guide you in everything even secular things. We have to walk by the spirit and use our minds of Christ. We have been given a mind of Christ but we have to be the ones to exercise it.
You know to throw a loop in this for one second,
Take smoking for an example. God can deliver us from it but we have to make the choice not to buy no more. The same with secular programs and music if we know in our hearts its wrong and we shouldn’t listen or watch it we have to make the first step by turning it off.
Another thing with some of this secular music today is a lot of it has subliminal messages.
There was a study on commercials on how they sold their products they used subliminal messages to bring in their customers in. Look at some of these soda adds they have. They have a glass of soda with ice and the crisp sound of it being poured over the ice the glass sweats from the coolness of the contents inside the glass. First your mouth dries and you crave a glass of the soda they show you on television. Before long your buying strictly their products.
It’s the same with everything underwear, soda, food, and even movies that they are coming out with. They show you just enough to draw an interest but half the time when you either purchase or watch it you leave very disappointed.

Here recently where I live they come out with a movie called broke back mountain but watching the commercials you think its totally all about a love story between a man and a woman but the truth is in that small print at the bottom that many didn’t see. When its actually about a love story between two men.
Bottom line is use Godly wisdom with what you subject your self too and research on it some. Especially when it comes to us parents and what our children are watching and listening too.
I hope I haven’t offended none of you but I only write what I feel in my heart. But most of all what Holy spirit has given me.

Scripture reference :
1 Cor 2:12

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:

16" For who has known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct him?"

But we have the mind of Christ.
(from The Holy Bible: New International Version.

See the American Psychiatric Association's website for some truly enlightening information on sub-liminal messages; that is, messages that are planted in one's subconscious mind through things like song lyrics and movie dialogue. Its scary.

Amen sister - we need to be so careful we do not grieve the Holy Spirit. We need to be aware that as the Spirit of God is in us, everything we do He is with us.

1 Cor 6:19 " Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?"

Eph 4:30 "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

The Bible clearly states that the things of the world are not of the Father (this means 'secular').

1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Paul instructs us to perfect holiness, which means being sanctified. We do this by setting ourselves apart from anything contrary to the Word of God. It's important to mention that this sanctification is not only physical, but spiritual as well.

2 Corinthians 7:1
Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

It also includes our thought life.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

It is God's will that we be sanctified (set apart).

1 Thess 4:3a
For this is the will of God, your sanctification
Sanctification (godly separation) is not talked about much today. But holiness (sanctification) and consecration is a requirement for all believers. What we feed our spirits with will affect us. This is why the personal choices we make are so important.

My husband and I don't watch secular TV, movies, or listen to secular music. It's a lifestyle that took about a year to develop, and now we find it so peaceful.
It is true that seeds can be planted from certain things we watch.
Also, Satan has no power over us other than that we give him. We cannot allow Satan access into our lives, whether it be by movies containing soft-core porn images (most 'R' rated flicks contain that nowadays), or senseless violence, or filthy language.
We need to guard ourselves from such worldly, anti-Christ messages.
This thread was a great idea Foreverwjesus.
