“Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality.” (Colossians 3:22-25 NASB1995)

No matter who we work for on this earth, if we are self-employed, or if we work for a company and we have a boss over us in authority, or if we work just for the Lord, we are to be those who obey those in authority over us, but with biblical exceptions. We are never to obey sin, and we are never to do what is evil in the sight of God. We are not to rebel against the Lord and to dishonor God and to do what is contrary to his will and purpose for our lives. So we can say “No!” to sin and to doing anything illegal or immoral.

And whatever we are called to do, we are to do our work heartily, as for the Lord, as though we are working for the Lord, and not for other humans. And we are to serve those in authority over us with sincerity of heart, fearing (honoring, respecting, reverencing, obeying) the Lord, and not the flesh. For it is the Lord we serve with our lives in whatever occupation he has chosen for us to serve in. And this includes women who are full-time homemakers and moms. And this occupation should be treated as a worthy profession.

And all of us who proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and as Savior of our lives, we should be working for the Lord, doing what he has called us to do, going wherever he sends us, saying whatever he gives us to say, and following him wherever he leads us. And so this means that we need to be students of the Scriptures who study them in their appropriate context, and who are applying God’s teachings to us to our everyday lives, in practice. The Word of God should be alive and active in how we live our lives each day.

And God has called each one of us who believe in Jesus to be his disciples, and to be his witnesses, and to share his gospel with the people of the world. And he has called us to minister to one another, to warn each other about “wolves in sheep’s clothing” who are liars and deceivers, and to exhort one another daily so that we are not taken captive by the deceitfulness of sin. We are to be encouraging and urging one another to walk worthy of Christ and of his gospel, to die to sin, and to obey our Lord in practice.

For…

The grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for Jesus’ return. For Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (See Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10)

And…

By God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

For…

Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

So, please be a follower of Christ who believes and who puts into practice what God has called all of us to do. For, Jesus said, “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’” (see Matthew 7:21-23)

Humbly I bow, Lord, before You,
Bringing my requests to You.
May I listen; hear You speaking.
May I follow You in truth.
Gently lead me in Your service.
Guide my steps and strengthen me.
Fill me with Your love and mercy.
May I live for Thee!

Let me be Your servant witness,
Telling others of Your grace.
May I always share the gospel
With those I meet face to face.
May I show the love of Jesus,
Caring for the needs of men;
Be Your servant witness always
For my Lord, Amen!

My desire to be like Jesus,
Living for Him ev’ry day.
May I obey all His teachings
Given me, so I’ll not stray.
Love You, Jesus, Lord, my master.
You are the King of my heart;
Follow You where’er You lead me;
Not from You depart!
