I once heard a pastor say that Jonah actually died in the fish.
After reading it again i came to agree with him. As it is depicted,a man couldnt live 3 days in that predicament. Plus as he pointed out,he had to be dead in order to symbolize the resurrection. If not,he could have spent 3 days in a cave in somewhere with rations.

Just throwing it out there.

Hi Lenz,

Jesus's body died and was buried but His Spirit didn't die. In Matthew 12:39-41 Jesus compares His imminent death with that of Jonah the prophet. During those 3 days, Jesus's Spirit went into Hades which is a very unpleasant place to say the least, and there He preached to the disobedients that ignored Noah's warnings, 1 Peter 3v18-20. If you read the account of Jonah, in Jonah chapter 2, he said a very heartfelt and uplifting prayer to God. I think both Jesus and Jonah were very much awake in their really unpleasant respective situations.

Thanks brother.
I think though Peter was speaking of Noah preaching before the flood.
I havent been in that text for a while,but i dont think Jesus went down there to preach.
But will certainly look at it again.

Im back. I took another look at Peter 3. The word to target in verse 20 is the word,"when," When did he preach? It was through Noah during the the time "when" God was a longsuffering.

What did the Bible say? did not the Bible say in essence, That God prepared a FISH for Jonah. can GOD make A special fish for Jonah. from The Fish's Birth, a deformed fish that was deformed especially To House Jonah. does not GOD pre ordain All Things and GOD nows every thing that is going to happen before He had his Son create all creation. Or you do not know this "GOD"? Who when a Ant dies and the bird that flies and falls to it's death, and GOD determines when a flea dies and he knows the name of every flea and the Butterfly cannot die unless God gives the command> The GOD that knows every Drop of rain and every Snowflake and have given it a name and He Determines the shape of every Snow flake and no snow flake is the same. and he is the one that determines the shape of every snow flake and how it falls.

I am getting to wonder you do not Know this "GOD". I think you need, to get know him. before you go anywhere else.

17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 1:17 . . The Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was
inside the fish three days and three nights.

FAQ: Was Jonah alive in the fish?

REPLY: Yes. (Jonah 2:1)

FAQ: The whole time?

REPLY: No; at some point in his nautical adventure Jonah went to a place called
sheol (Jonah 2:2) which he located at the roots of the mountains. (Jonah 2:6)

Well; the roots of the mountains aren't located in the tummies of fish, nor are they
located under the sea, rather: they're located underground deep in the Earth. So,
the only way that Jonah could possibly be at the roots of the mountains while
simultaneously in the belly of a fish was for the man and his body to part company
and go their separate ways. This is not impossible because according to Matt 10:28
people's souls don't always die along with their body.

Also, the language of Jonah's prayer strongly suggests that he was restored to life,
i.e. resurrected.

Jonah 2:6 . . I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars
was around me forever, But Thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my
God.

The Hebrew word for "pit" basically pertains to holes in the ground, but sometimes
speaks of putrefaction too, e.g. Ps 16:8-10 (cf. Acts 2:25-31)

Thanks brother. I cant ague either way,not being there.
But i will hold to the idea he died for now.
But i am usually wrong on a lot of things. But willing and wanting to learn

There are of course mountains under water. Even Hawaii is really just a mountain that starts at the bottom of the ocean.
Was Jonah a real event? Jesus seems to think so.

Matt 12:40; for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Are you familiar with the English language, "William Tyndale" or "the Cloverdale Bible" a "Translation" and The beauty of The Modern Day English Language and who is considered as the Father of The English language? and do you understand " Anthropomorphic Language"?

it would help and it would not hurt you, if you had a information as such, it seem you want to address.:pensive:

'But He (the Lord Jesus) answered and said unto them,
"An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign;
and there shall no sign be given to it,
but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
.. For as Jonas was three days and three nights
.... in the whale's belly;
...... so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights
........ in the heart of the earth.
The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation,
and shall condemn it:
because they repented at the preaching of Jonas;
and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.'"
(Matthew 12:39-41)

* This is what the Lord said, nothing more, nothing less. It is not for us to add or subtract anything, but simply believe what is written.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus

Matt 12:40; for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

And to be just as the Son of Man,he had to be dead.
Or, he could also use the example of raising Lazarus. He spent some time in the grave as well.

Yes...
We know the same God.
For by Him were ALL things created...

ALL praise glory and honor be unto God. Amen

Matt 12:39-40 . . As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge
fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the Earth.

Now when you think about it; Jesus' remains were never in the heart of the Earth,
nor even in the Earth's soil. They were laid to rest on the surface of the Earth in a
rock-hewn tomb.

The only way that Jesus could possibly be in a tomb on the surface of the Earth
while at the same time in the heart of the Earth; was for the man and his body to
part company and go their separate ways.

Same for Jonah. The only way that he could be in a fish's tummy while at the same
time at the bottoms of the mountains was for the man and his body to part
company and go their separate ways.

Jesus and Jonah are the two best biblical proofs I know of that there is an afterlife;
and part of it is located somewhere deep underground. For a great many people
who've gone on before us, its discovery has been a terrible awakening.
