1. Everyone grows older. "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Psalm 90:12
2. Life is tough and hard, a constant struggle. "Man that is born of a woman is...full of trouble." Job 14:1
3. Life is not always fair. "Of those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwell in Jerusalem?" Luke 13:4
4. No matter how winsome we are, we can't make everyone like us. Even of Jesus it was said, "Can there any good come out of Nazareth?" John 1:46. "And they laughed Him to scorn." Mark 5:40
5. No matter how hard we try, we can't change anyone. "O, Jerusalem...how often would I have gathered thy children together....and ye would not!" Luke 13:34 Each person, with God's help and our encouragement, must decide to change.
6. No matter how dark the outlook, we can't change the fact (or wouldn't want to!) that God scatters serendipities (surprise blessings) in our path. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Psalm 30:5b
Robert J. Hastings, from "The Station and Other Gems of Joy"
