Where in the bible does it talk about falling over backwards. I haerd that it is unbiblical and dnt understand. Any1 understand this topic and have biblical evidence to back their answer?

I know of a couple places in scripture where this happened. Well one for sure, the other may be metaphor. The first is in Isaiah 28, this may be the metaphor, where Israel's leaders would reject the gospel message in Christ due to their traditions and then fall into devine judgement:"11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken." The next one is in the Gospels where thoes who came to arrest Jesus were somehow violently affected when Jesus anounced who he was:"John 18:6:As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground." These are the only ones I know of. In any event falling over backwards is not a good thing any one ought to know this. Not realy sure what falling over backwards as a topic is, But conmmon sense says it is hard on the head. Hope some of this helps....DGB

test the spirit

i experinced that slain of spirit activiy, i was so new and first chruch i went was practicing that, bible says test the spirit, but pride in chrisitan is hindering them to test the spirit, Holy SPirit cant teach anything which bible is not teaching, for scripture were written by men of GOD inspired by Spirit of GOD and its clear from scripture falling backword is evil

In John's account of Jesus being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemani, it is written: "Jesus, knowing what was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, 'Who do you want?' 'I am He,' Jesus said (and Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said 'I am He,' they drew back and fell to the ground." (Jn 18:4-6).

I believe that their falling to the ground was due to a manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit. Such a manifestation played a big part in my salvation. Also, read Acts 9:3-4. The Apostle Paul fell to the ground under the power of God as part of his salvation, too.

Dice,

I think the verses you cite from Isaiah are all hyperbolic metaphors. In those verses, "falling backwards" is not to be taken literally. "Falling backwards" in this context means returning to old sinful ways. It does not mean literally falling down.

By the way, I have seen people fall literally under the power of the Holy Spirit (it has happened to me, too) and in every case, the landings have been soft. No one ever gets injured.

yes, sled, the Isaiah passage is metaphor. The rule for interpreting metaphor is: as it is true in the concrete and real, it is true in the figure. Isaiah's figure is very bad; falling backwards conveys the devestating results that God will bring on Israel for rejecting Christ as messiah. It is not healthy and can be devestating; that is common sense. Thoes falling in the gospel were enimies helping thoes who with wicked hands crucified the Messiah. I do hope this helps...DGB

True, those who fell to the ground were evil people who were working to crucify Jesus. However, their falling to the ground was not an evil act. Their falling was caused by the power of the Holy Spirit, evidence that they were truly in the presence of the Messiah. It wasn't the devil who pushed them to the ground.

Just like any other manifestation of the Holy Spirit, there are imitation or fake occurences of being slain in the spirit, I am sure. Some of these may be on television or for the benefit of onlookers. But....what would stop our Lord from covering someone with the Holy Spirit if God wants to do so?

Twice this has happened to me, and neither time did it hurt my head. I did not know before hand that the Spirit would fall on me. All that I felt during these occurences were the undescribable peace of God. When I rose back up physically, I felt filled with strength spiritually--renewed, so to speak--and ready to lean on the Lord and press on with joy and no trepidation. The Lord is good to His people and knows when we need strength. Does God often use this method (slaying in the spirit?) I don't know. But I do know He used it with me only twice. And I know for sure it was from God.

i wonder why today's christians seeking spiritual experinces which bible is not supporting, or about which bible says its negative or curse, and as bible is not supporting it how can someone claim that its from GOD? if falling backward doesnot hurt then why catchers r there? catchers not biblical either

as far as peace is concerned, familiar spirit do try to act like GOD but bible say test the spirit

I never sought these experiences. They happened only twice. I never even expected them. I seek for God's truth through bible study and prayer. Only God determines how he gets our attention. We do not determine that. God is Lord.

Online support systems and chat areas on the internet are not mentioned in the bible either, joy-messiah. Yet you receive fellowship, God's grace, and fresh manna here.

I have been following the Lord for 15 years. Two short experiences do not define my entire christian walk. I was just sharing, that's all.

In retrospect, I do now realize that I should have backed my statements with Scripture. In the next few days, I will pray about this and look in the Word. Thank you for pointing it out, joy-messiah.
