Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. Proverbs 10:17-19 ESV

You can miss a lot when you are too eager to talk and when you fail to keep a close watch on what you say. For starters, you are likely to ignore the good advice and instruction of others. However, you are also far more likely to speak improperly, even going so far as spreading a lie, slandering, or misspeaking in some way. That’s not an inevitable outcome, but it’s far more likely if you are quick to speak and slow to consider what you’re saying. It’s far better to be restrained and deliberate in what you say.

Being quick to speak can have far-reaching consequences for others. You may lead others astray with what you say, or you may discourage or wound someone with a harsh word spoken without care. Careful heart deliberation can give you time to consider what needs to be said and what should be left unsaid, and it can ensure that your words bring the most benefit to others.

Prayer: Lord, help me to speak with care and to listen with humility.
