When you pass through the waters, I [will be] with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. Isaiah 43:2 NKJV
Many of the old spirituals that slaves sang before and during the Civil War were about God’s protection and provision and the expectation of heaven. Songs such as “Sing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Wade in the Water,” “Deep River,” “Ezekiel Saw the Wheel,” “A Balm in Gilead,” “Go Down, Moses,” and so many others offered hope in a seemingly hopeless situation.
Passages like the one today are rich and have carried many generations of people through difficult times. God’s promises give life where death looms. You’ll find many of God’s promises in old hymns. Do you have any hymns committed to memory? If not, you might consider picking up a hymnal and adding a few to your arsenal for spiritual warfare or for times when you’re feeling blue.
Start with a few of the classics, like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “It is Well,” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Then progress from there, finding your own personal favorites that remind you of God’s faithful provision.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the many promises You’ve offered Your people in the scriptures. Keep them fresh in my mind and heart as difficult times come.
