steps to forgiveness

According to the teachings of Jesus, there is nothing more important than having a heart that is filled with forgiveness. And for many there is nothing any harder to do! Yet the scripture teaches plainly that when we do not forgive then we are not forgiven! We simply must forgive all offenses.

I want to give three simple steps without going into much teaching detail that will help in releasing ourselves from the bondage and captivity of the unforgiving heart.

1. We turn to God and ask him to forgive us for our unforgiving state. It is a sin to harbor unforgiveness.

2. We release the person to God. Release him from our desires and binding emotions. We trust in God to deal with him as He sees fit. We release to God. He is the judge.

3. We simply forgive the person in the presence of the Lord. At this point God will intervene and help us because our own bondage of unforgiveness is under the blood of the Lamb. He will enable us to do what seems impossible.

4. We continue to exercise our forgiveness. When future thoughts arise we make decisions to drop it all before the Lord.

To walk with a forgiving spirit is a walk of freedom. There is nothing so precious as to walk in freedom.

The truth is that in our human nature we are very incapable of forgiving and we are most often in a state of denial. We do not recognize our need to forgive. We hold grief, pain, sorrow, fear, bitterness and hurt close to us. It just seems to take up residence without any effort at all. Pain from the actions of others can simply consume us.

That is why it is so vital to realize our state of unforgiveness. Once we have asked God to forgive us then the Holy Spirit moves within us to enable us to loose and forgive and continue to mature in a forgiving spirit.

It is an hour by hour walk that takes us into a brighter future. It is a sowing to the spirit rather than the flesh.

The way of the cross is hard. But it is the WAY! It brings a death to the old ways and resurrection life to the new ways of God.

Praise the Name of the Lord

Just the fact that GOD will not forgive us for our sins if we do not forgive others shows us how serious GOD is about forgiveness and therefore LOVE itself. Amen to that.

Thank you for posting this great thread sister. God bless you

questions

why forgive someone evil and cruel? Does God love them? How can God love me and them? How can God not punish them for their evil things they do?

This is true the pain from the others actions does consume a person

Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

God forgave you and you are evil too before you accept Christ as your Savior. You cannot compare sins only the fact that sin is sin regardless of what wrong has been done. You sin, you rebell against GOD. Period.

Mark 11:25
And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

Matthew 6:15
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Dear Heather,

You need to understand that the fact that you forgive does not mean that God does not punish. You can rest assured that we all reap what we sow. And if we sow to the flesh we will reap destruction. Forgiveness frees the person who has been hurt from the trap and bondage of a bitter unforgiving heart. You are giving the reigns of judgment and punishment over to God when you forgive. If he wants to use the law of the earth to punish, then fine. If it looks as if the evil person is getting by with something you can rest in the fact that he assuredly is not. The laws of God always prevail.

Also we have to understand how deeply we need the Lord to forgive us. When I think of my own sinful nature then I am able to forgive, and that freely. None of us know where we would be if it were not for the grace of God. We all have an overwhelming ability to sin and sin terribly. Therefore we forgive because we have been forgiven.

I hope this helps a little in case you check the thread again. There have been books galore written on this very issue. Your feelings are understandable. But we have to follow Jesus....the way of the cross if we desire heaven.
