Re-reading ''The Discipline of grace'' by Jerry Bridges.
I now wonder what a non Christian (Even some we have met on this forum.) would be able to appreciate of some of the ''word'' in the chapter on ''The Discipline of Adversity''.
Prov.3:11-12 My son do not dispise the Lord's disipline & do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son delights in.
''Encouragement''
Heb. 12:5-6 & you have forgotten that the word of encouragement that addresses you as sons. ''My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline & do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, & he punishes everyone he accepts as a son''
Ecc.7;13-14 Consider what God has done, who can sraighten what he has made crooked? when times are good be happy:but when times are bad, consider God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man canot discover anything about his future.
Isiah45:7. I form light & creat darkness, I bring prosperity & create disaster, I the Lord, do all these things.
Lam. 3:37-38 Who can speak & have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities & good things come?
Amos.3:6 When a trumpet sounds in the city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?
''All hardship is discipline''
Heb. 12:7-8 Endure hardship as discipline; god treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?if you are not disciplined ( & everone undergoes discipline), then you are illigitimate children & not true sons.
''Submission to it''
Heb. 12:9. Moreover we have all had human fathers who disciplined us& we respected them for it. ----
(Not so for some but this is an example of the ideal) -----How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits & live!
2 Cor. 4:16-18. Therefore we do not lose heart .Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light & momenary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
'' The goal of Adversity'' Heb 12:10-11.
'' Destined for Glory'' Rom 5:3-4, James 1:2-5, 1 John.3:2, Rom 8:18.
How do we respond?
How do we explain to non Christians that we also; who know Him, suffer the same things but we know the one true God, Lord & creator as the Father who knows what are the correct situations for us to grow more like Him.? Those who live in the grace given & acheived by Jesus.
