Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, both now and forever. Psalm 125:2 NLT

These days, in an age where freedom is considered the supreme goal, the idea of walls often stands for confinement or limitation. When we can’t communicate well with others, we say it’s because they’ve put up walls, defending themselves as islands of one rather than facing criticism or questions.

Our natural tendency is to self-protect, which is a God-given instinct in this broken world. But we’ve taken it and used it to create distance between us and our Maker. We either leave no room for God, or we filter the aspects of His character we’re comfortable with—most often, His love and mercy over His holiness and righteousness. But His grace is bigger than our self-preservation, if we let it be.

When we allow ourselves a bigger view of God—embracing everything the Bible says of Him—we are liberated, not constrained. Being within God’s walls means we’re surrounded by His full knowledge of us (warts and all) but also His desire to preserve and protect us from whatever might separate us from Him. Trusting the Lord helps us face every challenge life presents with the confidence that we will grow in endurance and integrity.

Prayer: Lord God, keep my heart in tune with Yours so that I value Your protective guidance and care above my own resources. I’m only truly free in You.
