We often wrestle with the question: How much of salvation and sanctification is God’s work, and how much is ours? Here are three frameworks—some real, some tongue-in-cheek—that capture the debate:
1. Theo-gy (Monergism)
- Definition: God does it all.
- View: Salvation and sanctification are entirely God’s work. You’re along for the ride.
- Scripture cited: Philippians 1:6 – “He who began a good work will complete it.”
- Strength: Emphasizes God’s sovereignty.
- Risk: Can lead to spiritual passivity—“If God does everything, why strive?”
2. Synergy
- Definition: God enables, we respond.
- View: Grace is primary, but not coercive. We cooperate with the Spirit in repentance, obedience, and growth.
- Scripture cited: Philippians 2:12–13 – “Work out your salvation… for it is God who works in you.”
- Strength: Balances divine power with human responsibility.
- Risk: Can drift toward performance anxiety if grace isn’t emphasized.
3. Auto-gy
- Definition: I do it all.
- View: God is watching from a distance (cue Bette Midler), but has little to do with my daily life.
- Scripture cited: None—because this isn’t biblical.
- Strength: None.
- Risk: Leads to legalism, burnout, and despair.
Bottom Line
The Bible rejects both extremes. Salvation is God’s work from start to finish, but He calls us to active participation. Grace is not a spectator sport—it’s a partnership.
“Abide in Me… and you will bear much fruit” (John 15:5).
