Obil the Ishmaelite [was] over the camels, Jehdeiah the Meronothite [was] over the donkeys, 1 Chronicles 27:30 NKJV
Obil and Jehdeiah were King David’s logistics directors. They oversaw the official “truck fleet” of ancient Israel, undoubtedly managing a large team of drivers. The two are among dozens named in 1 Chronicles 23-27 as leaders in David’s realm, from priests and worship musicians to military commanders, vinedressers, and teachers. All of them contributed to the well-being of the kingdom.
The same is true for us. Some of us have “sacred” jobs in church or ministry settings. Come of us have “sacred” jobs in church or ministry settings. Some of us do “secular” things like repairing cars or originating loans. Whatever we do should be for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31) and the betterment of society.
One thing we must not do is envy or judge another person’s role. Unless we’re making our living through immoral means, all of our hard work is honorable in God’s sight—and He will ultimately bless it. But if you ever feel like you need a change, talk to God about that. He may be prompting you toward duties more beneficial to yourself and others.
This section of 1 Chronicles is reminiscent of the apostle Paul’s word picture of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12), in which everyone plays an important role. Today, your role is the job you have. Tomorrow? It may be something even better.
Prayer: Lord, please guide me into the most appropriate, fulfilling, and beneficial work.
