You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. Psalm 18:35 ESV

How would you describe the kind of person Jesus is?

Biblically, you could talk about Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One. You could describe Him as the King of kings and Lord of lords. You could say He is God the Son, God’s Son, and the Son of God.

Theologically, you could talk about Jesus as the second member of the Trinity, coequal with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. You could talk about His infinite and eternal sovereignty (greatness), providence (guidance and goodness), holiness (glory), love (graciousness), and mystery (“God alone knows”).

More importantly, how did Jesus describe Himself? You find the answer in a single verse, Matthew 11:29, where Jesus says He is gentle and humble (or lowly) in heart. And for both you can give much thanks!

The Lord could but speak the word and create the heavens and earth. So you don’t want His full power to land on you. As King David wrote three thousand years ago, His gentleness is more than enough.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. Too often I want to see Your power and fury, when what I really need is Your gentleness. Gently speak to my heart today. Guide me in the right paths to success in Your eyes, I pray.
