The Bible says the flesh of the flesh is in it's blood. No living animals can live without blood.
Gen 9:4; "Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
Lev 17:11; 'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.'
Lev 17:14; "For as for the life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, 'You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.'
I suppose there are cultures in the world that drink blood, but God told people not to do this.
But ever since Cain and Abel, it seems only blood appeases God.
Gen 4:3; So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground.
Gen 4:4; Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering;
Gen 4:5; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
We aren't really told why Cain and Abel were supposed to bring offerings to the Lord. It isn't in the Bible, but perhaps He told them to do so at some point.
But we have the vegetarian offering here, and we have the meat offering here. Why did God only accept the meat offering? Perhaps God isn't a vegetarian.
All jokes aside, I can't help but wonder... was it the blood?
When Moses was contending with Pharaoh to let the Jews go back to the promised land, something called Passover was initiated.
What did the Jews do during passover?
Exod 12:3; "Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers' households, a lamb for each household.
Exod 12:4; 'Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb.
Exod 12:5; 'Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
Exod 12:7; 'Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
Exod 12:13; 'The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
Exod 12:14; 'Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance.
Again, it was the blood. It was the blood that saved them. Earlier I said this started with Cain and Abel, but perhaps even before then, Adam and Eve found out they were naked, they tried
to clothe themselves with leaves, but God Himself made them clothes from animal skins. Was blood shed to cover a sin even then?
Now there are dozens of verses in the Bible about offerings and sacrifice, how and when it should be done, who should do it.. and so on. But when we move to the New testament, one thing doesn't change.
Heb 9:22; And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Again, it's the blood.
Matt 26:28; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
Mark 14:24; And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
Luke 22:20; And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
1Cor 11:25; In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
Again, a Lamb was slain. Because of this the price of sin was covered. His blood paid the price. Why blood?
Why wasn't it Jesus's hair, or skin, or bones, or even his internal organs? No it was the blood.
.. the life of the flesh is in the blood.
Luke 24:39; "See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."
When Jesus was resurrected, He wasn't a spirit or a ghost, He had flesh and bones. But He doesn't mention that He has blood.
Now a lot of discussion over the centuries has been made about.. was Jesus completely empty of blood or not? I don't know, but whatever the case may be...
He gave enough blood to cover the sins of all the generations of the Earth since Adam and Eve.
Heb 9:22; And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Heb 9:23; Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Heb 9:24; For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
Heb 9:25; nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own.
Heb 9:26; Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Heb 9:18; Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.
