1Cor 12:12; For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
1Cor 12:13; For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
1Cor 12:14; For the body is not one member, but many.
1Cor 12:15; If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
1Cor 12:16; And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
1Cor 12:17; If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
1Cor 12:18; But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
1Cor 12:19; If they were all one member, where would the body be?
1Cor 12:20; But now there are many members, but one body.
1Cor 12:21; And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
1Cor 12:22; On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
1Cor 12:23; and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable,
1Cor 12:24; whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked,
1Cor 12:25; so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
1Cor 12:26; And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
1Cor 12:27; Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.
1Cor 12:28; And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
1Cor 12:29; All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they?
1Cor 12:30; All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
1Cor 12:31; But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way.
This passage written by Paul to a Gentile church ( Corinth ) is talking about a body. The hands, the feet, the ears, the eyes, now what is this passage about a human body doing here.
Why is it in a chapter talking about prophesying, speaking in tongues, teaching, healing, etc...
Because the human body needs these things in order to function correctly. If all these things aren't working correctly, the body is lame, infirmed, disabled in some way.
If no one speaks in tongues, the body is weaker. If everyone does nothing but speak in tongues, the body is even weaker.
It's the same for the church. There is a lot of focus on speaking in tongues for whatever reason. But the church doesn't need everyone to speak in tongues.
It needs some prophets, some teachers, some miracle workers, some with the ability to heal, .. and yes even some who speak in tongues.
Everyone in the body has a gift whether they know it or not. Everyone. You might be a hand, or a foot, or an eye, or an ear.. but you fit into the body of the church one way or another.
1Cor 12:8; For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
1Cor 12:9; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1Cor 12:10; and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1Cor 12:11; But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
I've seen these gifts in just about everyone here on TalkJesus at one time or another. If you've posted a message on here at some point.. it's because you had a word of wisdom or a word of knowledge.
Pretty of people of here have shared testimonies about extraordinary faith in trying circumstances. People have been healed, people have seen miracles, people have cast out demons...
and yes, some have spoken in tongues. So, with all the people I see on here every day giving words of wisdom, giving words of knowledge, telling of miracles that happens, people getting healed, etc...
obviously some of you have the gift of teaching. So then why pick on tongues? If you yourself have one of these gifts ( and everyone does ) then why tell someone else they don't have a particular gift.
How would you even know if they did or not? Obviously, you could see if someone was healed or a prophecy came true, but some of the other gifts are harder to see.
I get concerned about some churches where tongues is the emphasis. Tongues, tongues, and more tongues. Doesn't anybody heal? Doesn't anybody prophesy?
It's much the same way here on TalkJesus. Everyone has a word of knowledge, everyone has a word of wisdom, everyone thinks they have the gift of teaching. ( but not all do )
Jas 3:1; Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.
This body is just as over-loaded with teachers ( or at least those who think they are teachers ) as some churches where everyone just speaks in tongues.
Now while many of you are good teachers, many of you aren't. Not everyone is a teacher.
1Tim 1:7; wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
But the point here is, if you have the gift of teaching, or the gift of knowledge, or the gift of wisdom... then that means that the gifts are still if effect.
No cessation. Not even of tongues. Either the gifts are all still here, or none of them are.
