"I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life! Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. John 6:47-50 NLT
Just as each of us needs literal food to sustain us physically, we need Jesus to sustain us spiritually and give us eternal life. Jesus came to earth to minister to spiritually hungry and thirsty people, and in the above verse, He identified Himself as “the bread of life,” meaning that He alone would be the spiritual nourishment each man so desperately needs.
Speaking to a big crowd gathered on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus once spoke this promise: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). He would be the one to meet that hunger.
The people who heard Jesus’ words in today’s scripture passage knew that God had provided their ancestors manna (bread) to keep them from starving. Every one of those people eventually died, but Jesus said that those who partook of Him, the bread of life, would live forever.
Jesus is your bread of life. What can you do to share that bread with others?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, only You can satisfy a man’s spiritual hunger. May I always live in that truth and also have the courage to speak it to others.
