The Church Connected To Heaven - Message #350
- July 17, 2005
Life is very fragile. An accident, disease, a miscalculation in surgery, toxic materials, or any number of things can suddenly take us from this life. We avoid thinking about such things until they happen. Then we wonder what it's like beyond the grave. Many people assume this life is all there is. When we die, we die. That ends it. Period.
Three things indicate to me that there is life after death. First, there are near death experiences. A Colonel I knew in the army was struck by lightning. He remembers looking down and seeing himself lying on the floor as he was floating away. Then he was revived.
Secondly, there are visions of heaven. A dear friend, who struggled with cancer, was granted a glimpse into the afterlife before he was taken there. He explained the beauty of it all to his daughter. These are real, documentable experiences.
But thirdly, the Bible speaks of life after death. The Bible tells us that death is the separation of body and spirit. The body is placed in the grave in hopes of the resurrection. The spirits or souls of those who trust in Jesus Christ are made perfect and are escorted by the angels into the presence of God. Such spirits have come "to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first born who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect" (Hebrews 12:22-23).
Amazingly enough, those of us now trusting in this same Savior, Jesus Christ, are vitally connected to all of that.
