But the people refused to listen to Samuel's warning. "Even so, we still want a king," they said. "We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle." 1 Samuel 8:19-20 NLT

A human king wasn’t God’s very best for the nation of Israel. He wanted to be the people’s King. But even though the leaders of Israel had the very best King in the Lord, they wanted a human king, and He said to the prophet Samuel, “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you” (1 Samuel 8:7-8).

Samuel relayed God’s words to Israel’s leaders; they refused to listen, instead telling him, “Even so, we still want a king. We want to be like the nations around us.”

Like Israel, we too can fall into the trap of desiring things those around us have—things God has said He doesn’t want us to have. When we do that, we find ourselves missing out on the satisfaction we are to find in God alone.

Prayer: Loving Father, may I seek satisfaction and fulfillment in You alone. Protect me from falling into the trap of comparing myself with others.
