Do not be surprised and wonder, brethren, that the world detests and pursues you with hatred. 1 John 3:13 AMPC
The world is full of people who prioritize themselves over others, which is to say the world is full of people.
From birth, we have wanted the best things for ourselves, and we dislike when others have what we want. In cases where only one person can have something, many would rather see no ne have it than someone else have it. This isn’t behavior we grow out of, and it isn’t unique to humans.
Put crabs in a bucket and although any one could easily escape, when one tries, the other crabs pull it down. It’s called “crab mentality.”
How might a world infect with “crab mentality” look at people adopted into God’s family and promised good things for eternity? It would hate us! It would want to pull us back into the bucket, even if it didn’t gain anything by doing so.
What do we do about that? We live in love, showing the world a better way, even if it doesn’t understand it—even if it hates us for it. First John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for picking me up out of the crab bucket. Show me how to bring others out in love.
