The Deeds of The Flesh

“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19-21 NASB’95)

The context here for the Jews who had become Christians, who were now transitioning from being under the Old Covenant Law to belief in Jesus Christ, via God-persuaded faith in the Lord, by the grace of God, is that freedom from the Old Covenant Law was not freedom to continue living in sin. They were not to turn their freedom into an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, through love, they were to serve one another.

Freedom from the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, dietary, and circumcision laws was not to be regarded as freedom to live however they wanted and to become lawless. And just because we are saved by God’s grace, through God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, and that this is not of our own doing, not of our own fleshly works, that also does not equate that we can now live however we want.

For faith in Jesus Christ means to be persuaded of God. And what God persuades us to do, as his people, is to die with him to sin and to walk in obedience to his commands, by the Spirit, and to no longer live in slavery to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. For Jesus put our sins to death with him on that cross that we might die with him to sin and now walk in obedience to his commands in holy living, by his grace.

And his grace delivered us from our slavery (addiction) to sin so that we can now serve our Lord Jesus in walks of obedience to his New Covenant commands. For the grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s return. God’s grace to us is not a free ride to heaven while we continue living in sin. No way!

Therefore, we cannot be of genuine faith in the Lord Jesus and yet continue in sinful lifestyles. And this is not saying that we will never sin (1 John 2:1-2) but that sin must no longer be our practice, our habit. Righteousness, godliness, moral purity, uprightness, faithfulness, honesty, and obedience to God must be what we live by, instead. For God still demands obedience to his New Covenant commands and that we put sin to death daily.

So, we are given a list of sins here, and we are forewarned that if we practice such things as this that we will not inherit the kingdom of God. And I can tell you right now that I don’t hear hardly anyone teaching that today. Even if they teach that we should not sin, and that we should live morally pure lives, and that we should obey the Lord’s commands, few teach that if sin is our practice, and not obedience, that we will not inherit eternal life.

Yet, that is what is taught all throughout the New Testament writings. It is definitely the message that Jesus taught and that the New Testament apostles taught. And you can see it clearly, if you are willing, if you read the Scriptures in their appropriate context, and if you don’t get hooked on Scriptures taught out of context which are then made to say what itching ears want to hear, and not the truth of what the Bible teaches.

And, again, this is not saying that we will never sin, or that we could not have a time in our lives when we may fall back into sin and need to be brought back to repentance and renewed faith and obedience. We have plenty of examples of those situations in the Scriptures. But what the Scriptures are very definite about is that if sin is what we practice, and not obedience to the Lord, that we will not have eternal life with God.

And I most always will supply you with plenty of Scripture references that you can look up on your own, and that you can read in their proper context, so that you can see for yourselves that this is what is taught in the New Testament consistently, but is rarely taught here in America. But just know that if you follow after the lies, and not the truth, that you are not guaranteed heaven as your eternal home. How you live your life matters!

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.

Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.

Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.

Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
