“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:22-25 NASB1995)

I believe that there are many people here in America (USA) who profess faith in Jesus Christ with their lips, who may be students of the Scriptures, who may have even been or still are teachers of the Scriptures, but who do not put the Word of God into practice in their daily lives, by the Spirit. So they have lots of head knowledge, and they may have even studied the Greek or the Hebrew, but they are severely lacking in applied knowledge.

For they still live their lives according to what their flesh desires rather than in accord with what God requires of us who profess his name. Their lives are not surrendered to the Lord, to doing his will, but to doing what is pleasing to themselves, according to what they like to do and how they want to live and how they want to spend their days. For God is not the Lord of their lives for they are still lord of their own lives, making their own life choices.

So it is not enough just to listen with our ears or to read the Scriptures with our eyes (or fingers if we are blind) or to even commit them to memory. So it is not enough to have a “daily devotion” if all we do is read or listen to a Scripture and then walk away and immediately forget what we learned, and so we do not put the word that we read (or listened to) into practice. The whole purpose of the Word of God is for us to put it into daily practice.

So, what is this perfect law, the law of liberty that we are to look into intently, so that we abide by it, and we do what it says? It is the gospel of Jesus Christ and what it teaches us with regard to what it means to believe in Jesus Christ. For it teaches that if we believe in Jesus, in truth, we will deny self, die to sin daily, and walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in practice, and sin will no longer be what we practice.

And why is it called the law of liberty? Because it delivers us out of our slavery to sin so that we can now serve the Lord in walks of surrender and in obedience to him and to his commands (New Covenant). It delivers us from lives surrendered to walking in sin, deliberately and habitually, and it frees us to now obey our Lord and his will for our lives, in practice, instead. So we are no longer just those who hear, but those who are doers of The Word.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
