Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." John 8:12 NLT
In today’s scripture verse, Jesus identified Himself as “the light of the world,” meaning that He came into the world to be the one true source of spiritual light.
Since sin entered into the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, our world has been shrouded in terrible spiritual death, darkness, and sin. Men are without hope of getting right with God—no hope except for Jesus!
Jesus wanted His listeners to understand that they didn’t have to live lives of hopelessness, darkness, and slavery to sin. Instead, if they would simply believe in and follow Him, He would give them the transforming, restoring “light that leads to life.”
Decades after Jesus had returned to heaven, the apostle John wrote, “If we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
Jesus has promised to give you light, a light you have the privilege of sharing with the world around you.
Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that I can walk in Your light every minute of every day. Help me, through Your Holy Spirit, to shine that light into the world around me.
